Find step-by-step instructions to remove red-eye from your pictures using editing tools in the free, downloadable software, Windows Live Photo Gallery.


Step one: Open your photo editing menu

  • In Windows Live Photo Gallery, double-click on the photo you want to edit, and the photo will appear in a viewing and editing window.
  • Click Fix in the toolbar at the top of screen.
  • A photo editing menu will appear on the right side of the window.

Step two: Select Fix red-eye from the editing menu

  • Select Fix red-eye from the editing tools menu.

  • The menu will expand to give you instructions for removing red-eye from your photo.

Step three: Select eye for red-eye removal

  • To draw a rectangle around the eye you want to fix, simply click the upper-left corner of the eye with your mouse, and then drag your cursor to the lower-right corner of the eye.
  • Take your finger off the mouse, and the red-eye will be removed.
  • Your changes will automatically be saved, even if you close the viewing and editing window or return to the photo gallery.

Tips and suggestions

  • If you need to enlarge your image in order to find the precise area to draw the rectangle, use the slider located between the "plus" and "minus" signs at the bottom of the screen to zoom in (or out) on your photo.
  • To pan while zoomed in, press ALT and drag your cursor to the area you would like to view.
  • You can increase the amount of red that you eliminate by selecting the eye more than once while using the Fix red-eye tool.

  • If Fix red-eye doesn't appear to have any effect on your picture, the eyes might be too dark. Try clicking Auto adjust first, and then click Fix red-eye.

  • To reverse one or all of the changes you've made to your photo, click Undo at the bottom of the viewing screen and select the option you want.
