New and expert photographers alike have experienced it. You take an otherwise perfect picture of friends or family but there’s one major flaw: glowing red eyes. We’ll offer helpful tips for using HP products and technologies to easily remove red-eye and avoid it in the future.

Remove red-eye with your HP printer

HP Real Life technologies are available on most HP Photosmart printers and many all-in-ones and inkjet printers. You can view your photos on your printer’s LCD screen and remove red-eye in a few simple steps—all without a PC.

All portable HP photo printers allow you to remove red-eye right on your printer’s LCD screen.

Remove red-eye with HP digital photo software

HP has two easy-to-use photo software solutions. Both software solutions allow you to remove red-eye quickly. Just choose Red-eye from the Edit menu. Then, to correct the problem, place the red-eye removal pencil over the area you want to fix, and click. Presto! No more red-eye.

HP Photosmart Essential is free software for editing, sharing, and printing photos. It comes with select HP printers, PCs, and digital cameras, and you can also download a free copy.

HP Photosmart Essential software offers many features, like enhanced search and editing functions that let you restore faded photos, crop and print video stills, and more. It comes with some HP products.

Remove red-eye with Snapfish

You can store and share your photos for free on Snapfish - an online service of HP. You can also easily correct imperfections like red-eye using editing tools on the Snapfish website.

After uploading your photos to the site, select the photo you'd like to touch up. Select "edit & organize," then "fix & enhance," then "remove red eye" and follow the instructions.

How to prevent red-eye

  • Whenever possible, try not to use a flash. If you have to use a flash, ask your subject to look toward the camera, but not directly at the lens.

  • Use additional light sources in the room.

  • Take pictures during the day.

  • Stand farther away from your subject.
