Causes of red-eye and how to prevent it |
 |

Red-eye occurs when our retinas reflect the light from a camera flash.

Ask your subject to look toward the camera, but not directly at the lens.
|
 |
When you take photos in a dim or dark setting, the light from your camera flash reflects off the subject's eyes. The resulting red glow (red-eye)
is the blood vessels illuminated within the subject's retinas.
The easiest way to steer clear of red-eye is to avoid using your flash whenever possible. However, if you have to use a flash, try these tips for preventing red-eye:
- Add lighting: Whether you wait and shoot on a sunny day or add lighting sources such as lamps, a brighter setting will make your subject's pupils contract and decrease the amount of light reflected back to the camera.
- Adjust your subject: Ask your subject to look toward the camera, but not directly at the lens. Also, try having your subject move farther away from you.
- Consult your camera: Look for the red-eye reduction feature offered on many digital cameras, which emits a short "pre-flash" to contract the pupils before you take your shot.
Sometimes red-eye is unavoidable, even after preventative steps. Read on to learn how to easily remove red-eye using your HP printer or photo editing software.
