Before and after photos of a couple on a boat.

Introduction

There are many ways to improve your appearance in photos—even after the picture has been taken. From removing red-eye to eliminating blemishes, using an HP Photosmart printer or All-in-One and photo editing software, such as Windows Live Photo Gallery, can help you look your best in pictures.

Give your image a boost

From wedding announcements to business
cards, make sure you're looking
picture-perfect in all your photos.
Facebook profile picture.
With the rise of social media networks,
your photos are available to a growing
number of people.
Photo editing can't change your outfit or perform a makeover, but it can add a healthy glow, remove a blemish, or even take a few years off your appearance.

Improve your photos to make a good impression when you're depending on a picture to say a 1,000 words:

  • Social media networks such as Facebook or LinkedIn

  • Business cards and brochures

  • Online dating sites

  • Holiday newsletters and Christmas cards

  • Wedding announcements and save-the-date cards

  • Those family vacation photos you know will be around forever

Although editing your images can lead to a wide range of improvements, don't rely on corrections alone to create your ideal photo.

Start small: Remove red-eye

Before and after shot of red-eye.
In just a few steps, you can remove red-eye from your photos with Windows Live Photo Gallery.

Even a simple edit such as red-eye removal can greatly improve the quality of your photo.
Discover simple fixes for red-eye, one of the more common photo flaws:

Use photo editing software
With the free, downloadable software Windows Live Photo Gallery, you can remove red-eye from your photos in just a few simple steps:

  1. Choose Fix red-eye from the editing menu.

  2. Draw a rectangle around the eye you want to fix by clicking the upper-left corner of the eye with your mouse, and dragging your cursor to the lower-right corner of the eye.

  3. Take your finger off the mouse, and the red-eye will be gone!

Use your printer
On your printer's touchscreen or LCD display panel, access the Edit menu and select Red-eye removal.

Or, on select HP printers, including the HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One Printer, Scanner, Fax, Copier, use a one-touch button for automatic red-eye removal before you print your photos.

Crop your photo

Photo of couple with a cropping square over them.
Picture a square over the most important part of you photo; cropping everything outside of the square eliminates unwanted elements (like the awkward arm and distracting pattern in the
photo above).
Do you love your smile within a particular picture, but think your pose is less than flattering? Crop it! Cropping can eliminate distracting or unappealing elements within your photo, turning that snapshot into a headshot.

Also, crop out any portion of the background (or foreground) that detracts from the overall appeal of the photo, such as the infamous photo bunny-ears or a stranger who accidentally steps in the shot.

Adjust the contrast, lighting, and color

Before and after photo of contrast, lighting, and color adjustments.
A slight increase in color temperature, along
with a decrease in contrast, can give your
photo a warm, flattering glow.
Adjust the contrast
Decrease the contrast in your photo to create a "softer" look that can help reduce small imperfections or shave a year or two off your appearance.

Photoshop.com features a Soft Focus editing tool that you can use to gradually add blur to your photos to achieve a softer, smoother complexion.

Brighten your photo
Brightening your photos can also help to soften features. Adjust the level of brightness, contrast, and shadows using the Adjust Exposure editing tools featured in Windows Live Photo Gallery.

For each setting, simply move the slider right or left to increase or decrease the level of intensity. Experiment to find out what's most flattering for your image.

Color
Add a little warmth to your skin tone by altering the color of your photo. Using the Adjust Color tool in Windows Live Photo Gallery, move the Color Temperature slider slightly to the right until the colors in the photo adopt a faint, warm glow.

Remove blemishes, shine, and wrinkles

Use the Touchup tool on Photoshop.com to fix blemishes, shine, and small imperfections.
Visit Photoshop.com to find editing tools for advanced corrections, such as removing blemishes and reducing shine.

Use the Touchup tool to circle an area that you'd like to fix (whether it has a blemish, a scratch, or too much shine). Then, drag a second circle to a "clean" portion of your photo to replace the area that needs a touchup.

Try Adobe Photoshop software's Blur tool to smooth out the appearance of fine-lines and wrinkles.

Remember to adjust the strength of the Blur tool to a low setting (about 20% or less, out of 100%) or features may become too fuzzy or distorted.
