Shooting on sunny days, especially when near reflective surfaces like water and snow, can lead to photos that are too bright.

A photo taken in the shade can dull colors and features. Allow the vibrant hues in your photo to shine by increasing the brightness using your in-printer editing tools.

Getting the perfect lighting within your photos can be difficult. There are many factors that can cause your photo to appear too bright or too dark:

  • Low lighting (for example, when shooting at night or in a dimly lit environment)
  • Camera flashes (especially when used indoors)
  • Sunlight (particularly harsh, midday sun, or reflections from water or snow)

A fast, easy way to correct photos that are too bright or too dark is to adjust the brightness directly on your printer’s touchscreen—just one of the many options found on in-printer editing menus offered by most HP Photosmart All-in-Ones.

Making your image brighter or darker can affect the quality of your photo in a variety of ways, including boosting or diminishing contrast. For example:

If your photo is too bright, decrease the brightness to:

  • Add contrast between the dark and light portions of your photo
  • Fade the appearance of harsh shadows
  • Make your subject look less pale and one-dimensional

If your photo is too dark, increase the brightness to:

  • Expose more details within the photo
  • Reduce contrast between the dark and light portions of your photo
  • Soften features and add a gentle warmth to your photo

Discover lighting basics for better photos to help prevent many common photo flaws in the first place.
