HP TouchSmart PC Basics

HP TouchSmart Homepage

Lets' get to know the HP Touchsmart homepage. From the windows desktop double tap the house icon to open the HP Touchsmart software. The HP Touchsmart homepage has 2 rows of tiles. Tiles are shortcuts to your various programs. Use the top row for programs you use everyday and use the bottom row for your other programs. Touch a tile and slide your finger right or left to scroll. This works in both rows. To move a tile between rows drag it from one to the other. You can also drag a tile from one location to another within the same row.

Open a Tile

To open a tile a single tap is all you need. To get back to the home page just tap the house icon in the upper left. You can open tiles from either the top or bottom row. Remember tiles are shortcuts to your programs. Some programs like this solitaire game will open outside of the HP TouchSmart software when you are finished using the program just close it to get back to HP TouchSmart.

Moving between HP TouchSmart and Windows desktop. You can switch to the Microsoft Windows desktop from the HP Touchsmart homepage by tapping the windows icon in the upper left. Tap the house icon in the task bar to return to the HP TouchSmart software.

Resizing

When using HP TouchSmart you can resize tiles to get a closer look. To do this touch two fingers at the same time, slide them apart or together like this.

Summary: Opening a Tile, moving between HP TouchSmart and Windows Desktop, Resizing

Let's summarize. Tiles are shortcuts to programs. Use a single tab to open a tile. Tap the house icon to go back to the homepage. Touch and slide to scroll or flip. Tap the windows icon to go to the Windows desktop. Tap the house icon in the taskbar to go back to HP TouchSmart. Use 2 fingers to resize.

HP TouchSmart Touch Techniques

Hi and welcome to the next generation of computers. This tutorial series will show you some fun and exciting ways to interact with your computer using our specially designed HP TouchSmart software. You'll learn some simple techniques and quick tips that can help you take advantage of the unique experience HP TouchSmart has to offer.

Let's check out the touch screen itself. The HP TouchSmart screen responds to touch. Double tap the house icon to open the HP TouchSmart software. The touch screen is not pressure sensitive so pressing harder won't help. Just touch it lightly and precisely as we'll teach you in the next couple minutes.

Let's look at the layout of the HP TouchSmart software itself. These are tiles. In HP TouchSmart tiles represent shortcuts to programs and can display live content. You can also use tiles for links to websites and RSS feeds. Tiles can also represent items like all the albums in your music library. Another common way to view your content in HP TouchSmart is in the form of a list, as seen here. There are different ways to work with the HP TouchSmart PC screen you can become familiar with. Some of them are single tap, scroll or flip and drag and drop.

Tap

To select or open items just touch the screen with a single tap. Touch the screen briefly and lift your finger.

Scroll or Flip

Scroll or flip. To browse thru your content you can scroll or flip. They both combine touching and sliding your finger. To scroll touch an object, maintain contact and slide your finger right or left. Slide your finger then stop before lifting to scroll precisely. Scrolling works for many applications like scrolling thru your music library to find an album. Scrolling also works in lists where you can scroll up and down.

Flip is another way to browse your content. Just slide your finger and release to flip. Rows and lists must have enough items in them to scroll and flip.

Scroll and flip, two fun ways you can find what you're looking for in HP TouchSmart.

Drag and Drop

Drag and drop. To move objects between lists, drag and drop. This combines touching an item dragging it out of a lower list and dropping it into another location. For rows that scroll right and left drag the object up or down to pull it out of the row. For lists that scroll up and down drag the object left or right to pull it out the of the list.

Here's a helpful tip…when you drag an object out of a lower list an icon appears this tells you, you are actually moving the item and not just scrolling.

Summary: Tap, Scroll or Flip, Drag and Drop

Lets summarize... Tap an item lightly and lift your finger to select or open it. Scroll by touching, sliding, stopping and lifting. Flip by touching, sliding and releasing. To move an item touch it, drag it out of the list and drop it into a new location. Music tutorials.

Building a playlist

Building play lists is quick and easy using HP TouchSmart. The albums in your music library are on the left and the playlist is on the right. Scroll to find an album. Drag an album out of your library and over to the play list to add it. All of the songs in that album are added to the play list. Let's switch to song. Here are all the songs in our library. Scroll to find a song you want to add. Drag a song out of the list and over to the play list. If you want to add songs quickly tap add to list at the top of the playlist. Tap the green plus sign to add songs. If you want you can also add all the songs from an artist or even a genre into the playlist. Each playlist can hold up to 500 songs. When you're finished tap done. To change the order of the songs in the playlist drag a song out of the list and move it to a new spot. To remove a song from the play list drag it out of the list and drop it into the trash can down below. To play a song in the play list just tap it. A speaker icon appears next to the song that is currently playing. Song name is displayed in the music control bar in the upper right. Tap previous or next to skip thru the songs in the play list. Tap pause to stop. Tap the house icon to go to the home page. Other HP TouchSmart programs work in a similar way. You can use the same techniques you've learned here such as tap, scroll and flip to browse and play with your photos, videos and other content.
