Overview

Gelato logoCo-founded in January 2002 by HP and seven of the world's leading research institutions, the Gelato Federation, also known as Gelato, is working to fulfill their mission of advancing Linux on the Itanium platform by bringing together those developing and using Linux on Itanium for the purpose of fostering Itanium-specific research, focus groups, and collaborative discussions. Today, membership has expanded to nearly four dozen and sponsorship has increased to four.

An open exchange of ideas and solutions is nurtured through diverse lines of communication, including interactive areas of the Gelato portal, several interest-specific mailing lists, and regular meetings. In addition, Gelato facilitates the development and dissemination of Itanium-specific, open-source solutions, including a complete and robust tool chain. Gelato invites participation from all interested organizations and individuals.

Member benefits

Gelato offers participants the opportunity to take a leading role in the worldwide development and promulgation of Linux on Itanium, the next generation of high-performance computing. By collaborating and partnering with other world-class institutions, Gelato participants are building credibility and reputation in this critical research area, as well as exerting immediate impact through www.gelato.org.

As an affiliated program, Gelato members are welcome to attend and participate in the annual HP CCN conference for additional IA-64 relevant technical presentations and discussions.

Engagement model

Consistent with the tenets of the open-source movement, all interested parties are welcome to participate in Gelato. Both organizations and individuals can engage with Gelato on an informal level by contributing to our portal either by adding or downloading utilities, libraries, or applications working on Linux on Itanium or by joining one of Gelato's technical mailing lists.

If participants are interested in becoming involved in the governance of the organization, they are welcome to apply for official Gelato membership. Membership in the Federation confers the right to determine Gelato's direction and objectives by having voting representation on the Gelato Strategy Council. Member organizations may introduce new topics for consideration at the biannual Federation meetings and will have access to all internal Gelato documents, presentations, meeting notes, and Strategy Council communications. Please contact Mark K. Smith at mksmith@gelato.org for more information on becoming a Gelato Member.

Resources

The Gelato portal – www.gelato.org – provides the Linux Itanium community with the most current and useful resources. It's the place to go for information on Linux on Itanium, with up-to-date information about events, developments, projects, and software releases. It is also the central repository for details about all Gelato Federation news, including information about its diverse and globally-dispersed members and their activities.

Members

With members from almost every continent on the globe, the work of the Federation centers around seven main focus areas: compilers, parallel filesystems, performance, scalability, cluster and grid computing, Linux Itanium Standards, and Linux Itanium tool integration. Within these areas, Gelato members are applying new technology and solutions to specific applications in bioinformatics, high-energy physics, and atmospheric sciences just to name a few. The current demographics of Gelato Members include 15% supercomputing centers, 30% national labs and research centers, and 55% universities.

As an organization representing the research computing communities in government, industry, and academy, Gelato's primary objective is to be responsive to community needs and interests. By working together to meet real-world problems and application needs, we strive to achieve a balance between long-term and short-term goals with attention to both cutting-edge research and the long-term perspective. Gelato is committed to providing the research community with open-source solutions for the Linux Itanium platform.

For a list of and information on the current members of the Gelato Federation, go to the portal's members' page.
