HP has announced the release of its breakthrough file
sharing product, HP
StorageWorks Scalable File Share (HP SFS), based
on Lustre™ open source protocol. This product
is the second based on HP's "StorageWorks grid" architecture
and the first commercial research product to use a
new Linux clustering technology, called Lustre™, which
was developed through collaboration between HP, the
U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) and Cluster File Systems,
Inc.(2)
Lustre™ is an open, parallel file system architecture
that demonstrates a new paradigm in designing scalable
file system solutions. Inherent in the Lustre™ design
are the concepts of:
- Scalable data serving through parallel data striping
- Scalable meta data
- Separation of file meta data and storage allocation
meta data to further increase scalability
- Object technology - allowing stackable, value-add
functionality
- Distributed operation
This collaborative effort specified a set of milestones
where defined functionality and proven capability would
be achieved. HP will continue to build on this research
to produce Lustre-based products for High Performance
Computing markets. (See the Resources
page for more information.) This HP CCN collaboration
is an important component of this ongoing research
and development.

Collaboration members have the opportunity to influence and shape the development of Lustre™ technology and ensure its success.
Members are invited to regularly scheduled webinars, conferences, and will have access to discussion boards when available. These are hosted by technical experts and have two basic formats:
- Design reviews - current design issues are discussed and feedback sought. Provides members the opportunity to influence HP's Lustre™ design center.
- Status updates - current state of developments, achievements, and challenges are reviewed.
Members are also invited to an annual HP CCN conference for in-depth technical presentations and discussions.
