HP Smart Tank 500, 600 Printers - First Time Printer Setup

This document is for HP Smart Tank 500 and 508 All-in-One, Smart Tank 511, 514, 515, 516, 517, 518, 519, 530, 531, 538, 615, 617, and 618 Wireless All-in-One, and Smart Tank Plus 550, 551, 555, 559, 570, 571, 651, and 655 Wireless All-in-One printers.
To set up a printer for the first time, remove the printer and packing materials from the box, connect the power cord, fill the ink tanks, install the printheads, load paper, align the printheads, and then install the printer software.

Learn how to unpack, set up, and install the HP Smart Tank series printer.

Step 1: Remove the printer from the box

Remove the printer from the box, and then remove all tape, stickers, and packing materials.
  1. Remove the printer from the box.
  2. Place the printer on a level surface, where you intend to use it.
  3. Remove all tape from the outside of the printer.

  4. Lift the scanner lid, and then remove the protective tape.

  5. Open the front door.

  6. Remove the tape and packing material from the ink access area.

  7. Open the printhead access door, and then remove the tape and packing material from inside the printer.

  8. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then plug the other end into an electrical outlet.
      caution:
    Do not connect the USB cable at this time. The connection to the computer is established during software installation.

  9. Turn on the printer, and then wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  10. If your printer has a touchscreen control panel, follow the on-screen prompts to select a language.

Step 2: Fill the ink tanks

Fill the ink tanks with the ink that came with your printer.
note:
Be aware of the following when working with ink bottles:
  • Keep the ink bottles beyond the reach of children.
  • Open the ink bottle only when you are filling the ink tanks.
  • Store the ink bottles upright in a cool, dry place.
  1. Open the cyan ink tank cap.

  2. Open the cyan ink bottle.
    • If your ink bottles have twist-off lids, twist to remove the lid, and then carefully set it aside.

    • If your ink bottles have a flip-top lid, twist the lid to remove it. Pull the seal tab to remove the seal, and then carefully dispose of it. Replace and tighten the lid on the bottle, and then open it.

  3. Turn the bottle upside down, place it over the tank spout, and then gently push the bottle down onto the spout.
    If the bottle does not start draining, remove it, and then reinsert it onto the spout. Do not squeeze the bottle.

  4. After the ink tank is filled, set the ink bottle upright, and then replace or close the ink bottle lid.
  5. Close the ink tank cap.

  6. Repeat the previous steps to fill the other ink tanks.

  7. Store any leftover ink in a cool, dry place.
  8. Close the front door.

Step 3: Install the printheads

Install the printheads that came with your printer.
  1. Open the front door, and then open the printhead access door.

  2. Wait until the carriage stops moving before you continue.
  3. Lift the plastic handle on the printhead packing material.

  4. Gently press down on the printhead latch to open it.

  5. Remove the plastic insert, and then recycle it.

  6. Open the printhead packages, and then remove the printheads.

  7. Pull the orange plugs straight up to remove them from the tops of the printheads.

  8. Remove the tape from the printhead contacts using the pull tabs.
      caution:
    Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles.Do not replace the protective tape on the contacts. Handling these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electricalconnections.

  9. Slide the printhead at a slight upward angle into the empty slot, and then gently push up on the printhead until it snaps into place.
    • Insert the black printhead into the right slot.
    • Insert the tri-color printhead into the left slot.

  10. Close the blue carriage latch by pushing down firmly until the latch snaps into place.

      caution:
    Do not open the blue carriage latch after printhead installation unless you are installing new printheads or moving the printer long distances.

  11. Close the printhead access door, and then close the front door.

Step 4: Load paper and align the printheads

Load plain white paper in the input tray after you install the printheads.
  1. Lift the input tray, and then extend the output tray.

  2. Slide the paper guide to the left.

  3. Load a stack of plain white paper into the input tray, and then slide the paper guide in until it touches the stack.

  4. Align the printheads.
    note:
    It is normal to hear sounds coming from the printer for several minutes after the alignment process begins.
    • If an alignment page prints automatically, follow the instructions on the page to scan it and align the printheads.
    • If an alignment page does not print, follow the prompts on the printer control panel to print an alignment page, and then follow the instructions on the page to scan it and align the printheads.

Step 5: Install the printer software

Your HP printer hardware is now set up, and you can install the printing software. Do not attempt to connect the printer to a computer until instructed to do so during software installation.
