HP-UX 11.00 Core Operating System Media

This document explains the improvements to the (Ignite-UX) install tool and options for the HP-UX 11.00 Core OS media for the September 2001 release. This release of the 11.00 Install/Update/Recovery media does not change the 11.00 Core software or required 11.00 ACE patches from the November 1999 release. Please review the following information for changes with the 11.00 Core OS media.

Important: The HP-UX 11.00 Install/Update/Recovery CD dated June 2001 does not include the Additional Core Enhancements (ACE) patch bundle (XSWGR1100 revision B.11.00.47.08). This bundle provides the minimum set of patches required for technical computing applications on HP9000 systems. Unpredictable system or application behavior could result without these ACE patches or their superseding patches.

If you have not yet installed or updated your system using the June 2001 media, please discard it now. The September 2001 11.00 Install/Update/Recovery CD includes the ACE bundle needed to cold-install a system using the Default and Technical Computing configuration choices. For more details on this problem, please see the letter sent to you in July 2001.

September 2001 Changes

The QPK1100 patch bundle on the Support Plus CD now includes all of the 11.00 defect fixes previously available in the general release (GR) bundle, XSWGR1100. QPK1100 (revision B.11.00.54 and later) now replaces the XSWGR1100 bundle that was previously included in the Commercial Servers configuration. The QPK1100 bundle (from the 11.00 Support Plus CD) is automatically selected for all configurations when you cold-install the 11.00 software from the 11.00 Install/Update/Recovery CD onto workstations, technical servers or commercial servers.

Overview
      1. The hardware-enablement patch bundle, XSWHWCR1100, now includes patches required for the new PA8700 systems. The updated install kernels also support the installation of the 11.00 Core OS software to these new PA8700 systems using the latest I/O adapters supported with boot devices. The XSWHWCR1100 bundle is automatically selected for all configurations (using 11.00 Core OS media from June 2001 or later).
      2. The HP-UX 11.00 Install/Update/Recovery media now provides updated install kernels that work with install utility and recovery commands to support FibreChannel boot devices in addition to the SCSI peripherals. (Note that HP9000 servers and workstations may require updated system firmware to support newer I/O cards and peripherals as boot devices.)

      Software Selection menu now supports the choice of Mass-Storage and Networking I/O driver products for installation with the Basic Configuration choices and other selected software.

      1. Mass-Storage I/O driver products support PCI/HSC Tachyon TL Fibre Channel cards (A5158A, A6684A, A6685A) and the PCI RAID card (A5856A) on several HP9000 systems.
      2. Networking I/O driver products support the 100BT, Gigabit Ethernet, FDDI, HyperFabric, and RS-232 Mux adapters on systems with GSC/HSC and PCI interfaces.
      3. The "read before installing or updating to hp-ux 11.00" CD booklet provides a list of selectable drivers that are available on the current release of the 11.00 Install/Update/Recovery media.

 

    The Ignite-UX install tool reduces the complexity and number of reboots required for the installation of 11.00 Core OS software and selected patch bundles and/or add-on products.

    1. A single-pass process to cold-install HP-UX that requires only one reboot (a second reboot is needed if workstation firmware needs upgrading).
    2. The install utility also enables the selection of network drivers, diagnostics and HP-UX patch bundles from the Support Plus CD, and graphics bundles from the Core OS Options CD for Technical Computing systems during the initial cold install process.
    3. The installation starts with software from Core OS CD, then the tool prompts for the next CD based on other selected software and configuration options.
    4. System reboot is deferred until the selected software from each CD is installed and configured.

     

    Ignite-UX now supports configuring "A5856A RAID 4Si" cards on 64-bit OS capable systems.

    1. From the "welcome" Ignite-UX screen if you press the "Advanced Options" button, you should see a button "Configure A5856A RAID 4Si cards" on systems that have this card installed.
    2. Pressing this button will run the "irm" utility to configure the card.
    3. If you choose to install HP-UX to a disk connected to this card, be sure to also install the A5856A (I20 RAID) driver software that supports it during the installation.
