Product structure

Network Node Manager 7.0 comes in 2 versions to fit all sizes and complexities of today’s network environment. These 2 versions are Network Node Manager Starter Edition 7.0 and Network Node Manager Advanced Edition 7.0. Capabilities of the Advanced Edition can be expanded with Network Node Manager Smart Plug-Ins.

HP OpenView Network Node Manager Starter Edition 7.0

Network Node Manager Starter Edition 7.0 is the entry-level product designed for smaller networks (250-500 nodes) needing basic network management capabilities (primarily layer 3 routers/hubs) from a single management station. Network Node Manager Starter Edition 7.0 is fast to deploy and operate, yet is flexible enough to maximize your current network resources and expand as your network grows. Built-in intelligence helps your staff understand all the components and complex relationships in your network. Easy-to-use tools are provided to help you identify and resolve problems fast. These tools fit all expertise levels of operators while still providing the flexibility to easily custom fit to your unique business needs.

Network Node Manager gives you the edge in managing your network—optimizing your total cost of ownership, operational efficiency and resources and providing an easy upgrade path to the more advanced capabilities of Network Node Manager Advanced Edition 7.0 when you need them.

Here are just a few of the reasons you will want to upgrade to the new Starter Edition if you have a smaller network, managing network devices from a single management station:

·          Network Node Manager’s new “Home Base” Graphic User Interface is specifically designed to provide all users a simple starting point for using the product. It provides an easy-to-understand summary of your network’s status and quick access to detailed event data and targeted maps.

·          Launch targeted views from an event to immediately get to the heart of the problem.

·          Filter and correlate the high volume of network events before presenting the information to your operators.

·          Out-of-the-box correlators are included that target specific areas of event categories to find the real source of a problem and present it to your operator.

·          Correlation Composer lets you tailor the event correlation behavior to fit your particular needs without any special programming knowledge.

·          Management from Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 2.1 on Intel

Leverage your investment. Network Node Manager Starter Edition 7.0 is available as a 250 node pack. Multiples of these node packs can be used to manage environments larger than 250 nodes. Network Node Manager Starter Edition 7.0 provides an easy upgrade path to Network Node Manager Advanced Edition 7.0 for larger more complex network environments which you can leverage as your network requires them.

HP OpenView Network Node Manager Advanced Edition 7.0

Network Node Manager Advanced Edition 7.0 is designed for all sizes of networks requiring advanaced network management capabilities, including the management of switches and VLANs, sophisticated root-cause analysis and distributed environments for large networks spanning multiple sites/departments. This is the platform for even greater capabilities delivered through the Network Node Manager Smart Plug-Ins. Network Node Manager Advanced Edition 7.0 includes the extended topology capability for management of complex switched environments and problem diagnosis for advanced path analysis in one product.

Network Node Manager Advanced Edition 7.0’s rich capabilities easily integrate new services, technologies and increased usage demands within your budget constraints. It provides robust management of large, complex switched and routed environments while minimizing the need for more hardware and software:

·          Enterprise networks are complex with many overlaying network services and protocols. Network Node Manager Advanced Edition 7.0 accurately understands these services and their relationships. When a network outage occurs, Network Node Manager Advanced Edition 7.0 does not guess at the problem—it intelligently and actively isolates the problem providing the operator with the root cause and service impacts.
·          Intelligent Diagnostics for Networks cuts through the noise to provide the few meaningful events that are easily understood by operators.
·          Advancing beyond reactive root-cause analysis, Intelligent Diagnostics for Networks presents the state of operation of your key network technologies. This gives you insight into whether your services are at risk of future failure—in a predictive manner.
·          As your network service requirements expand, you can add capabilities to Network Node Manager Advanced Edition 7.0 with the Network Node Manager Smart Plug-ins (SPIs), which are available separately.

Network Node Manager Advanced Edition 7.0 is available in the following node packs to efficiently match the size of the network environment you need to manage:

· Advanced Edition 250 Node Pack
· Advanced Edition 1000 Node Pack

· Advanced Edition 5000 Node Pack
· Advanced Edition Unlimited Node Pack

HP OpenView Network Node Manager Smart Plug-Ins

Advanced management for specific environments is available separately from Network Node Manager Advanced Edition. Currently, 4 new Smart Plug-Ins are available:

·          NNM Smart Plug-In for Advanced Routing, for IPv6, Cisco HSRP (Hot Standby Router Protocol) and OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) environments
·          NNM Smart Plug-In for LAN/WAN Edge, for monitoring the frame relay connectivity between you and your service provider
·          NNM Smart Plug-In for MPLS VPN, to manage MPLS service availability and understand impact when the network interface has gone down
·          NNM Smart Plug-In for IP Multicast (available with NNM Advanced Edition 7.01) for discovery of multicast routing technology, its relationships and traffic rates

Migration Options

A new advanced capability is being introduced with this new release of NNM and will be phased in across NNM 7.0 and NNM 7.01 releases for the NNM Advanced Edition.   This new intelligent polling/status capability, via the Active Problem Analyzer (APA), will be available for duplicate IP and HSRP environments starting with NNM 7.0.  Soon afterward, we will enhance the APA in NNM 7.01, expected to release in January 2004, to provide the intelligent polling/status capability for a broader IP environment as well as providing the layer 2 Adjacent Device failure root cause analysis functionality. We expect a smooth transition from NNM 7.0 to 7.01.  Based on your network environment and migration plans, you may choose to upgrade to NNM 7.0 now or wait until the NNM 7.01 version is released."
