Gobi technology overview:

HP Mobile Broadband notebooks featuring Gobi technology can take advantage of Mobile Broadband services offered by leading network operators in virtually all parts of the world - regardless of the type of network technology.
•  Flexible - HP Mobile Broadband notebooks with Gobi technology support multiple wireless carriers, on one platform.
•  Easy to order and use. When the notebooks arrive, use HP Connection Manager to walk through carrier selection and network connection of your choice
•  Wider area coverage - no need to hunt for Wi-Fi hot spots.
•  Reduced costs - easy to deploy, predictable monthly costs versus per-connection charges for Wi-Fi or DSL.
•  Improved international experience - across countries, carriers, and network technology, with reduced roaming costs.
•  Security - 128k encryption provides a higher level of security than most public, unsecured Wi-Fi hotspots.

What is new?

Gobi™ is a technology platform from Qualcomm designed to deliver built-in high-speed cellular connectivity to notebook computers.  HP Mobile Broadband notebooks featuring Gobi technology can take advantage of the ultra-mobile Internet services offered by leading 3G wireless network operators in virtually all parts of the world. Gobi technology aims to meet the demand for worldwide connectivity capabilities beyond Wi-Fi, and is being certified on UMTS HSPA and CDMA2000® EV-DO networks around the world.

How Gobi works

It's quite simple – instead of having unique radios for each carrier, the Gobi platform supports multiple global wireless network technologies, in a single unit. A user can purchase a device with Gobi and activate wireless service on almost any major network worldwide...changing networks when desired...quickly, and without having to purchase new hardware.

How is Gobi different from air cards or other broadband solutions?

Gobi technology is embedded into selected HP notebook computers. This means there are no air cards to break or lose. Like Wi-Fi, Gobi can deliver an "always-on" experience, but without the dependence on location. High-speed mobile wireless is limited only by the wireless carriers' coverage. And, because Gobi technology works with both GSM and CDMA 2000 / EVDO networks worldwide, companies don't have to deploy specially-configured notebooks based on geography - users can activate their notebook on the wireless network that makes the most sense for them.

Benefits for the International traveler

For international travelers, Gobi provides the ability to switch between networks on the same notebook easily.
For example -  A US customer who has a wireless data contract in the US, and needs service in Europe, can simply activate service on a European wireless provider's 3G GSM network on a roaming or "pay as you go plan". Upon return to the US, the notebook will work on the user's domestic carrier as usual.
•  For business travelers, the ability to avoid up to $15 charges for Wi-Fi connections or in-hotel DSL charges
•  For IT, the ability to standardize on a single hardware platform regardless of wireless carrier technology
•  For the user, a simple out of the box experience that walks through carrier selection and activation
