Wireless and mobility – test your battery

Test the status of your battery

With the Smart Battery Technology available in the latest HP products, you can automatically test the status of your battery. Equipped with a microchip, Smart Batteries maintain and report their own status, thus providing users with accurate information, whether they use different batteries in the same notebook or the same battery in different notebooks.

Automatically test your battery status

Use the following steps to download, install and use the HP Battery Check. This utility is supported on all HP Notebook PCs manufactured in 2006 and most systems in 2005.
1. Download the HP Battery Check (SP32299) then select Run and follow the directions on your screen.
2. Insert the AC power adapter into the notebook PC and plug directly into a wall outlet.
3. Click Start, All Programs, then click Hewlett-Packard, HP Battery Check.
The results of the Battery test will be presented immediately. Detailed instructions are provided with the results.
For more information about using the HP Battery test, including a list of notebook PCs that are supported, see HP Notebook PCs - HP Battery Check Frequently Asked Questions
Note: If a warning message is displayed stating "This system is not supported by the HP Battery Check tool" during the installation, your system may not be supported by the battery status test technology.

Manually test your battery status

Follow these easy methods to manually test your battery if it is not equipped with the Smart Battery technology.
Measure the duration of your battery's discharge cycle
1. Connect your AC power adapter and completely charge the notebook battery
2. Restart the computer in Windows Safe Mode by repeatedly pressing the F8 key when the HP or Compaq logo appears. Select Safe Mode from the Startup Menu by using the arrow keys
3. When Safe Mode appears, disconnect the AC power adapter from the notebook
4. With a timer, measure the total length of time that the notebook is running until the notebook turns itself off
Note: The measured time of discharge should be close to the specifications for your HP model. If the difference between the measured time and the specifications is significant, use the steps on the Maximize your Battery Life page to calibrate the battery.
