Go mobile, think global
Lately, mobility is a new way of life. But using notebooks doesn't just make life simple. It helps conserve energy, resources and the planet, too.
HP's Design for the Environment (DfE) program was started in 1992 to help make products that can reduce impact on the planet—from design, to development, to distribution and beyond.

Designed to reduce environmental impact

Innovations in materials help reduce impact on the environment without sacrificing quality:
•  HP Illumi-Lite displays use mercury-free LED backlighting that makes recycling easier while decreasing notebook weight.
•  Material innovation helps us comply with the EU's Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) initiatives. In fact, HP has set a goal to remove mercury from its entire notebook line beginning in 2010.
•  Packaging is reduced and made more intelligently, producing less waste and lowering shipping costs.

Designed for energy efficiency

According to the EPA, notebooks already use 78% less power on average than desktops,1 but, recently, their design has become even more efficient:
•  Power-saving features like longer battery life and low-power displays reduce the time your notebook must be plugged in, lowering energy usage and costs. The ambient light sensor dims your display in low light conditions to reduce power consumption.
•  ENERGY STAR® and EPEAT labels indicate the energy efficient features of those HP notebooks that are qualified or registered as such.

•  Energy monitoring and advice software shows you just how much power you are using and how to optimize performance and energy usage.
•  Solid state drive options are quieter, cooler and use 50% less power than HDD.

Designed to reuse and recycle

Responsible (and cost-effective) reuse and recycling help you give your technology life after disposal:
•  Recyclable magnesium case is lightweight and more durable than typical plastic casing.
•  Some HP notebooks are made from post-consumer recycled plastics, helping conserve resources without compromising durability or quality.
•  HP Disk Sanitizer permanently removes sensitive information from your hard drive,2 making it possible to reuse or donate your notebooks.
•  Trade, donate or recycle your HP or non-HP notebooks (or other products) with our convenient global reuse and recycling programs.Learn more.
