| A thin client is a device used in server-based computing. In server-based computing, the thin client only runs the user interface: it transmits mouse clicks and keyboard data to a server. All user applications run on a server, and video data is sent back to the client for display. Thin clients are usually deployed in an environment using Citrix Presentation Server (using an ICA client) or Microsoft® Windows Server™ Terminal Services (using an RDP client). Companies typically choose server-based computing to centralize application deployment, access database information, or deploy a corporate portal. Thin clients offer great savings potential in a healthcare enviroment — for in-room terminals, nursing stations, reception areas — anywhere data and applications need to be accessed, and especially where systems are shared among multiple users. Cost savings |
| When you replace a desktop with a thin client, the savings start immediately. Each thin client is less expensive to buy, manage, and deploy than an average desktop. HP entry-level thin clients start at just $199. However, the bulk of savings comes from reduced IT maintenance, support, and troubleshooting. Gartner estimates the cost of a managed desktop is about $4000 per year, vs. just $2600 a year for a thin client terminal. (Source: Gartner COM-23-4338, August 2004). In addition, thin clients deliver up to 80% power savings over a traditional PC. Space is another area where thin clients provide an advantage with their smaller footprint (especially important in medical facilities where space is often an issue). Most significantly, thin clients eliminate the time and labor required to maintain and fix individual desktops. |

Added security |
| With thin client terminals, your data is safe from hard drive or media theft. All important data, from electronic medical records to patient billing information, is stored securely in the data center, far from the day-to-day terminals in less secure places. Thin client two-factor authentication enables secure access to networks with devices such as smart cards. With authentication enabled on your terminals, the most sensitive medical data in your organization is well secured on the servers in a thin client system. |

One-stop updating and support |
| With complex medical applications, all your staff must be up and running at all times. HP's thin client system ensures that applications run smoothly and quickly at everyone's terminal at the same time -- no more one-by-one fixes for staff desktops. Your new e-prescription application or practice management software update immediately goes into effect -- without the time needed for individual desktop installations. |
| Since all data on a thin client network is centrally stored, updates to patients' records also take effect immediately for anyone with access to them. Thin client architecture makes centralized applications and data a reality for medical organizations of all sizes. |
Reliability |
| HP thin client design goes through rigorous testing in the HP lab to ensure it can be part of a rugged clinical environment. Thin client devices usually have no moving parts. Since there are no fans, hard drives, and other moving parts, thin clients have been proven to be more durable and longer lasting than desktop PCs. This translates into an extended product life of up to five years vs. a traditional desktop. |
| When you look at the cost savings and security benefits involved, it makes sense to use thin clients as part of your medical information infrastructure. Easy to set up, easy to maintain, and easy on your budget — HP thin clients are a great way to keep your costs low while allowing your staff access to all your critical medical applications. |

| "We have seen a return on investment of over six million dollars. We've enjoyed direct hard savings from the replacement of both client and server equipment, as well as the reduced cost of rollout." |
