When is tape virtualization the right choice for data protection?

Overview

Managing physical backup devices can be challenging for small and large businesses. Physical tape devices typically require regular supervision: they break, tapes jam, drives need cleaning, and tapes need to be rotated. Compounding this is the speed at which some tape backup systems operate -- backups can take hours and even up to a day to complete. If files are accessed during that time, file locking issues may arise. Plus, restoring a single file can take hours and may require tape swapping if the backup is spread over multiple tape cartridges. All in all, physical backups are necessary but can consume a significant amount of time.
Many vendors now offer VTL (virtual tape library) solutions that overcome many of the issues associated with physical backups. VTLs, which exist as storage/software or software-only products, emulate a tape drive or library and tape cartridges. Businesses of any size can benefit from tape virtualization. This IT Guide explains tape virtualization and reasons for using it. It examines the details involved in evaluating VTL vendors and implementing a VTL solution, and explores HP's VLS product line.
