What is a counterfeit print cartridge? |
| Imitation isn't always the sincerest form of flattery, especially when it comes in the form of counterfeit HP print cartridges. Counterfeit print cartridges are refilled cartridges or knock-off cartridges that are represented to customers as new print cartridges from HP - which they are not. Usually, a counterfeit print cartridge is packaged in a box that looks very similar, if not identical to HP's package, and that fraudulently displays the HP trademark. These print cartridges are meant to mislead the consumer into believing that they are genuine HP products. This does not mean that all refilled or remanufactured products are counterfeit or otherwise fraudulent. |
| Legitimate refilled or remanufactured products exist on the market and their packaging states that they are 'refilled', 'remanufactured' or 'compatible' products. However, if such products are packaged or sold in such a way that confuses or potentially confuses customers into believing that they are buying a brand new genuine HP product, or a product that is associated with or endorsed by but not manufactured by HP, these products may be counterfeit. The sale and distribution of counterfeit HP print cartridges is fraud and illegal. |
Why should you care? |
| Although counterfeit print cartridges may look like genuine HP print cartridges, they don't provide you with the high print quality, proven reliability, and consistent page yields you have come to expect from HP print cartridges. Potential risks of using counterfeit print cartridges include: poor quality prints, reduced page yields, cartridges that fail prematurely, printer damage that may require repair, interruption of printing infrastructure and workflow, and potential invalidation of hardware warranty. |
| In addition to these economic risk factors, counterfeit print cartridges may be harmful for the environment by wasting paper through poor print quality and by uncontrolled and illegal manufacturing processes. Counterfeiting may result in lost sales to legitimate distributors and resellers as well as lost tax revenue. |
How is HP protecting its customers? |
| In addition to providing our customers with information and tools to assist them in properly identifying Original HP print cartridges, HP also investigates suspected counterfeit activities. |
| To help track counterfeit activity around the world, HP relies on its counterfeit intelligence group. Much of the intelligence that is ultimately used to put counterfeiters out of business comes directly from customers who report suspicious products and activity directly to HP. |
Between 2005 to 2008, HP has: |
| • |
Conducted 4,620 investigations in 55 countries, resulting in 3,528 enforcement actions conducted by law enforcement officials where more than $795 million USD worth of counterfeit supplies products have been seized. (Investigations and actions have occurred on every continent except Antarctica). |
| • |
Seized more than 8 million counterfeit ink cartridges and more than six million counterfeit toner cartridges - a total of more than 15 million counterfeit pieces. |
