HP vs. Okidata

Lower costs through simplified printing and support

Color printing is inherently more complex than black and white printing, and can have hidden costs that you may not expect when you first purchase a printer. HP has made significant strides in reducing the complexities so you can be more productive, as well as worked to reduce the hidden costs so you save more over the life of your printer.

Print more with the toner in the box

All HP LaserJet printers ship with standard cartridges not low-capacity ones so you don't have to buy new supplies soon after your purchase. A comparison of manufacturer-published yield specs shows that the Okidata C5150, C5400n, C7350n and C9600n ship with low-capacity starter cartridges as compared to the standard cartridges that ship with the HP Color LaserJet 2550n, HP Color LaserJet 4700n, and HP Color LaserJet 5550n.
• The Okidata C5150n ships with 1,500 CMYK pages.
• The HP Color LaserJet 2550n ships with 4,000 CMY and 5,000 K pages.
• The Okidata C5400n ships with 1,500 CMYK pages.
• The HP Color LaserJet 3800n ships with 6,000 CMYK pages.
• The Okidata C7350n ships with 5,000 CMYK pages.
• The HP Color LaserJet 4700n ships with 10,000 CMY and 11,000 K pages.
• The Okidata C9600n ships with 7,500 CMYK pages.
• The HP Color LaserJet 5550n ships with 12,000 CMY and 13,000 K pages.
When you consider the value of the extra toner included with the HP printers, the comparable Okidata printers can cost 3-8% more to purchase, as this graph shows.

Avoid hidden operating costs

The drums in Okidata color printers must be primed with toner -- up to one-third of the cartridge. When you replace a drum, the old drum is discarded with unused toner which is not accounted for in cost-per-page projections.
Okidata doesn't use shutters to protect the printing drums, so users can accidentally scratch the drums or expose them to light, which degrades print quality and can cause the drum to need to be replaced earlier than expected.
HP integrated toner cartridges include protective shutters to prevent damage to the sensitive imaging drums.

Reduce support costs and downtime

HP printers feature an intelligent design to improve user productivity and make maintenance easy. Following are some examples of how select HP printers compare to that of select Okidata printer models in internal HP testing.

Design featureHPOkidataCustomer benefit
Access pointsHP Color LaserJet 2xx0, 3x00, 4xx0, and 5xx0 printers provide simplified access to the complete paper path and don't require users to remove consumables.Okidata 5000, 7000, and 9000 color printers have horizontal paper paths that require users to remove light-sensitive imaging units to access them.Fewer access points that are easier to access simplify paper jam clearing.
Print technologyThe lasers that power HP Color LaserJet printers are high-intensity light sources that can be projected further away from the imaging drum and from within protected housings. The low-intensity light-emitting diodes (LED) that power Okidata color printers must be placed very close to the imaging drums, which have toner on them.LEDs can have toner transferred to them during the printing process, which affects print quality and requires regular cleaning. Light sources that are further from imaging drums and in protective housings eliminate the cleaning issues associated with LEDs.
Printer managementThe free HP Web Jetadmin print management software allows batch configuration of multiple printers and batch deployment of pre-configured drivers from a web browser.Okidata printers and client drivers must be configured one at a time.Save time and reduce errors by batch configuring multiple printers and clients at once.
Control panelsThe advanced 4-line displays on HP workgroup printers like the HP Color LaserJet 4700 offer animation and context-sensitive help.Okidata printers offer 2-line text display with no context-sensitive help.More intuitive, advanced control panel designs make printers easier to use.
Toner gaugesProvide an easy view of supplies levels from the HP control panel. Not available on the Okidata control panel.Easily monitor supplies levels to reduce downtime.
