Q: What 10/100vg LAN Adapters are available from Hewlett-Packard?
HP no longer sells 10/100vg LAN Adapters. The HP 10/100vg ISA LAN Adapter (product number J2573A), the HP 10/100vg EISA LAN Adapter (product number J2577A), and the HP 10/100vg PCI LAN Adapter (product number J2585B) are no longer available.

Q: Can I connect a 100vg LAN Adapter to a 100Base-T hub?
Not directly. Since 100vg uses demand priority polling and 100Base-T uses Carrier Sense Multiple Access with collision detection, the technologies can not directly communicate. To connect a 100vg network with a 100Base-T network, you will need a device such as the HP Advancestack Switch 2000 (product number J3100B) with the HP Advancestack Switch 2000 100vg Module (product number J3103A) and HP Advancestack Switch 2000 100Base-T Module (product number J3191A).

Q: What type of cable do I need for the 100vg LAN Adapters?
100vg will work with Category 3 and Category 5 Unshielded Twisted Pair cable with RJ-45 connectors. All 8 wires (4 pair) must be used and wired with the standard twisted pair assignments. In some Category 3 cable installations, only 4 wires (2 pair) are available for LAN traffic, in which case that cable cannot be used with 100vg. If you presently have a 4-pair UTP cable network that complies with the Ethernet/IEEE 802.3 Type 10Base-T specifications, you can use the same cables for your 100vg network as long as all 4 pairs are available and wired correctly. The specifications for 100vg cable for HP 100vg LAN Adapters (4-pair 100 ohm unshielded twisted-pair cable) are part of the EIA/TIA 568 standard or ISO/IEC DIS 11801.

Q: Will HP continue to develop new 100vg drivers for updated operating systems?
Yes. Software for the HP 10/100vg PCI LAN Adapter (product number J2585B) and HP 10/100 VG ISA LAN Adapter (product number J2573A) ships with Windows 98 and NetWare 5. There will continue to be updates and patches for new operating systems including Windows 2000.

Q: When I turn on my PC, Windows 95 does not find my HP 10/100vg LAN Adapter. What is the problem?
There are several possible causes for why Windows 95 might not properly see your HP 10/100vg LAN Adapter when you turn on your PC. To determine the problem, follow these steps:
  1. From the Windows 95 Start Menu, click on Settings, Control Panel.
  2. Double click on the System icon and select the Device Manager tab.
  3. Look for a yellow question mark and an entry labeled "Unknown Devices". The "Unknown Devices" may be under "Other Devices". If you do not have an entry labeled "Unknown Devices", go to step 6. If you do have an entry labeled "Unknown Devices", continue with step 4.
  4. Double click on each of the "Unknown Devices" and look for an entry labeled "PCI Ethernet Controller". If you do not have an entry for the "PCI Ethernet Controller", go to step 6. If you do have an entry for the "PCI Ethernet Controller", continue with step 5.
  5. Highlight the "PCI Ethernet Controller" and delete the entry. Restart Windows 95. A dialog box should state that new hardware has been found. Use the drivers from the most recent HP Support Disk to install the HP 10/100vg LAN Adapter in Windows 95. Your PC should now properly see your HP 10/100vg LAN Adapter.
  6. If you either do not have an entry labeled "Unknown Devices" or if you do not have an entry labeled "PCI Ethernet Controller" under the "Unknown Devices" entry, and if you have either the HP 10/100vg PCI LAN Adapter (product number J2585A or J2585B) or HP 10/100vg ISA LAN Adapter (product number J2573A), use Windows Explorer (or File Manager) to delete the following files if present:

         • Windows\System\Hpfend.vxd
         • Windows\System\Hpfendm.vxd
         • Windows\System\Hpddnd3.vxd
         • Windows\inf\nethppci.inf
         • Windows\inf\nethpdd.in
  7. Reboot your PC. When Windows 95 appears, you should see a listing of "New Hardware Found". If you have the HP 10/100vg ISA LAN Adapter (product number J2573A), it is not a plug-and-play module and may not be found on a plug-and-play search.

Q: How do I improve the slow performance of my HP 10/100vg PCI LAN Adapter (product number J2585B) in Windows 98 using the IPX/SPX compatible protocol?
Download the updated NDIS 4.0 driver for the LAN Adapter. To download the driver, go to the software for 100vg LAN adapters page under "product support / software updates" on the HP ProCurve home page. Locate your product and click on "NDIS 4.0:4.04". The driver is part of the self-extracting file "hpddnd4.exe".

Q: How do I improve the slow performance of my HP 10/100vg PCI LAN Adapter (product number J2585B) on a Windows NT workstation which is running Novell's IntraNetWare Client?
Download the updated NDIS 4.0 driver for the LAN Adapter. To download the driver, go to the software for 100vg LAN adapters page under "product support / software updates" on the HP ProCurve home page. Locate your product and click on "NDIS 4.0:4.04". The driver is part of the self-extracting file "hpddnd4.exe".

You may be able to just update your network software in Windows NT. If problems continue, then uninstall the IntraNetWare Client, update the NDIS 4.0 driver, then reinstall the IntraNetWare Client.

Q: How do I run my HP 10/100vg LAN Adapter in "promiscuous mode" for traffic analysis?
HP does not provide specific drivers for promiscuous mode for traffic analysis. The application that performs traffic and packet analysis runs promiscuous mode in the HP 10/100vg LAN Adapters. For NetWare/DOS Clients you will need to download the RXMONSTK.COM file from Novell and load it after LSL.COM as shown here:

LSL.COM
RXMONSTK.COM
HPFEODIM.COM
IPXODI
VLM

Q: What should I do if I cannot see my Novell NetWare server from my Windows 95 workstation when using an HP 10/100vg LAN Adapter?
Check the following:
  1. In Control Panel, double click on the Network icon. Verify that you have the correct client (usually Client for NetWare Networks), verify the protocol is IPX, and verify the correct LAN adapter driver is selected.
  2. Verify that the IPX frame type in Windows 95 matches what you are running on the server. You can verify the frame type by following these steps:
  1. Click on Control Panel.
  2. Double Click on the Network icon.
  3. Double click on "IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol".
  4. Click on the "Advanced" Tab.
  5. Click on "Frame Type".
  6. If the setting does not match what is on your server, change it so it matches and reboot the Windows 95 PC.

Q: On my Novell NetWare Server, after I load my HP 10/100vg LAN Adapter, I receive an error message that says a "Public Symbol Loader Error" occurred. What should I do?
Usually, this error means there is a mismatch between the version of the HP 10/100vg LAN Adapter driver and the version of the supporting NLM's, such as ETHERSM, MSM, and NBI. You can find compatible versions of the LAN adapter driver and the NLM's on the current HP 10/100vg LAN Adapter support disks which can be downloaded from the software for 100vg LAN adapters page under "product support / software updates" on the HP ProCurve home page. The latest versions of the NLMs are also available from Novell.

Q: After installing the HP 10/100vg LAN Adapter in Windows 95, I receive a Windows protection error after reboot. What should I do?
HP is currently investigating this error. To workaround this error, do one or more of the following:
  • In the PC's BIOS, enable the Memory Hole.
  • Disable USB support in the BIOS.
  • Remove the USB supplement for OSR2.1 through the Control Panel.
  • Turn off Bus Mastering on the HP 10/100vg LAN Adapter and its slot in the PC.
