Q: Does HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX support non-public community name functionality for legacy device Closeup Views?
Yes, a patch to version N.01.01 allows a Closeup View to be launched for a device that is configured with a non-public community name. The non-public community name must be configured in HP Openview NNM first. The patch (patch_N0102.tar.Z) can be downloaded from the HP Customer Care site.

Q: After installing HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX and running "OVW", my HP Device icons do not come up executable (i.e., I cannot execute HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX by double-clicking on them). What should I do?
Shutdown HP Openview NNM/UX and restart. Once synchronization completes all HP device icons should be executable. If the problem persists, select Options->HP Hub & Switch Admin and select the Openview tab (properties sheet), select the ForceMapUpdates option and click OK. Shutdown HP Openview NNM/UX and restart again. This will force the update of Openview map symbols to be executable.

Q: I have problems using ASA/UX with HP Openview NNM's Distributed Management Consoles feature. What should I do?
The HP Openview NNM product has a problem with the parenthesis and white space in the application names "HP Interconnect Manager (ASA)" and "HP Network Configuration Manager (NCM)". To rectify the problem, use the following steps to rename and re-register the application:
  1. Login as root user on the management server.
  2. Run the universal environment variables script:
    "./usr/ASA/icm.envvars"
  3. Shutdown all copies of "ovw" and run "$OV_BIN/ovstop"
  4. Edit the ASA application names in the registration files:
("icm_hubmgr" and "icm_ncmmgr") found in the directory $OV_REGISTRATION/C to be the following:
    "HP_Interconnect_Manager"
    "HP_Network_Configuration_Manager"
  5. Add the following line to the $ASA_DATA/icm.ini file:
    [OvMap]
    ForceMapUpdates=1
  6. Run "$OV_BIN/ovstart"
  7. Run "ovw"
  8. When ovw has synchronized remove the lines that you previously added to the $ASA_DATA/icm.ini file in step 5 above:
    [OvMap]
    ForceMapUpdates=1

Q: When should I use HP Toptools for Hubs & Switches versus HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX?
If your network size is small to medium (fewer than 1,500 nodes), and if your management environment consists of PC-based platforms, then you should use HP Toptools for Hubs & Switches. If your network size is on a large, enterprise scale (anywhere from 1,500 to 25,000 nodes) or if your management environment consists of HP-UX workstations, then you should use HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX in conjunction with HP Openview Network Node Manager/UX.

Q: HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX displays the error message, "Device does not respond". What should I do?
The "Device does not respond" error message is displayed generally due to a failed SNMP query to the device or simply put the manager station cannot communicate with the device. This problem can also appear if the SNMP response is not returned to the manager station before the timeout period is exceeded. Follow the steps below to troubleshoot this problem:

  1. Verify the connectivity of the device to the network using PING or TRACEROUTE or other diagnostic testing tools.
  2. If the connectivity tests are successful, ensure that the correct community name is used in SNMP requests.
  3. If previous tests are successful, increase the SNMP TimeOut and/or Retries parameter(s) in the Network section of HP Hub & Switch Admin(Options->HP Hub & Switch Admin).

Q: What are the licensing requirements for HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX?
HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX is not bound by any licensing procedures. Licensing procedures are required by NNM/UX only. All licensing documentation and procedures should be applied to NNM/UX only.

Q: Does HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX support the On-Demand mapping feature of HP Openview NNM?
Yes, version 27361J and greater support the On-Demand mapping feature provided in NNM 4.x.

Q: My HP hubs and/or switches appear in the Segment view as end nodes as opposed to the Network view as the corresponding device. What's going on and what should I do?
HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX relies on the NNM/UX product for the discovery and layout of networking devices. NNM/UX in turn relies on products like HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX to provide key configuration information on these devices to facilitate layout. During the installation of HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX, device information is provided to NNM/UX which will result in a correct topological representation of your HP hubs, bridges and switches in the network. Therefore, if you are experiencing this problem, either the installation was unsuccessful or you should upgrade to a version of HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX that at minimum provides support for that incorrectly mapped device. Of course its always better to update to the latest release available, this is no exception (see release matrix above).

Q: Using HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX (product number J3250N), how can I get the close-up view of my HP ProCurve Switch Switch 2512 or 2524?
HP Hub & Switch Management for OV-UX, version N, displays these devices as generic icons. Double-clicking on these icons does not bring up the close-up view. You can use either of the following two workarounds.

  1. You can get the close-up view by entering the switch's IP address into the URL line (Internet Explorer uses the label "Address", while Netscape Communicator calls it "Location:") of a web browser. The supported browsers and versions are listed in the Management and Configuration Guide for the HP ProCurve Switch Switch 2512 and 2524, in the chapter "Using the HP Web Browser Interface", section "Web Browser Interface Requirements".
  2. Configure Network Node Manager to bring up the switch's TELNET interface when double-clicking on the icon. To do this, perform the following steps:
  • right-click on the switch icon
  • from the menu, choose Symbol Properties
  • set Behavior to Execute
  • set Application Action to Terminal Connect: Xterm TELNET
  • click on Target Objects
  • for Additional Objects, click Add
  • click OK
  • click OK
