Latest Enhancements to Award-winning ProCurve Networking by HP Switch Family Focus on Investment Protection

PALO ALTO, Calif., June 19, 2000 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced its third phase of enhancements to its flagship ProCurve Networking by HP family of Layer 2+ switches (HP ProCurve Switch 8000m, 4000m, 2424m, 2400m and 1600m). The new enhancements, available free of charge, emphasize HP's commitment to protecting customer investments.

HP, a leader in networking innovation, functionality, price and performance, is making aggressive strides in the industry by passing on the savings to the customer. The new firmware has several features that will simplify and ease the management of switched Ethernet networks.

"Proactive networking is all about simplifying," said John McHugh, general manager, ProCurve Networking by HP. "We are making the switch infrastructure powerful and simple to manage. This frees the customer to spend valuable time on other pressing issues."

The key new feature is an enhancement to the embedded and Web-based ProCurve Networking by HP stack management. This new feature will allow the creation of a virtual stack of switches with a single IP address. This is the most powerful stacking solution in the industry, allowing redundant switch interconnections with up to 20Gbits and as many as 1,200 switch ports in the stack. It also includes a new Web-based tool to ease the administration of VLANs.

Another key feature is the policy management of link speed for Category-3 wiring environments. This feature will allow a user to easily fix the speed of a switch port at 10MB, while still allowing for auto-negotiation of duplex. The combination of these two features will ultimately save the customer time.

The next two planned phases will add advanced security features for networks of all sizes, including TACACS+ and SNMP Version 3, and policy-based access control based on the emerging IEEE 802.1X standard. The next phase is expected to be available in the fall of this year.

The first phase of this series of five planned releases provided industry-leading Quality-of-Service features (see http://www.hp.com/rnd/news/pc_net_leads_market.htm); the second phase provided high-availability features, such as switch meshing and broadcast control (see http://www.hp.com/rnd/news/software_upgrade.htm).
