HP ProCurve
Networking Leads the Market with Quality of Service Features in Price-Leading
Layer 2 Desktop 10/100/1000 Switches
PALO ALTO, Calif., March
17, 1999 -- Hewlett-Packard Company, a leader in networking technologies, today
announced the delivery of free Class of Service (CoS) and port-security features
in ProCurve Networking by HP Layer 2 switches to ensure maximum, secure network
performance for mission-critical applications and servers. ProCurve Networking by HP
is the first in the industry to offer Quality of Service (QoS) on networking products.
Class of Service (or
Traffic Prioritization) is just one component of HP's ProCurve Networking QoS strategy. CoS features allow network managers to configure
their networks so business-critical applications and servers are given priority
during periods of high bandwidth demand. CoS enables the prioritization of traffic
at the desktop switch level by creating differentiated levels of priority. Packets
are tagged, switched, and forwarded in queue according to their prioritization.
These features use 802.1p/Q standards and are totally interoperable with other
existing switches and routers.
These new and
expanded switch security features allow network managers to assign security
levels port by port on the ProCurve Networking by HP Switch 8000m, 4000m, 1600m,
2424m and 2400m. Port
security on these ProCurve switches can be configured on a continuous learning,
first heard, or assigned port basis. If a security violation is detected, the
network manager can request that the switch forward an alarm to the management
station and/or prevent an unauthorized device from eavesdropping on flooded
unicast traffic intended for other devices.
HP's new CoS and security
features for the ProCurve Networking by HP switches are expected to begin shipping in the
ProCurve Networking by HP Switch 8000m, 4000m, 1600m, 2424m, and 2400m on June 1. Customers
who purchase the ProCurve switches prior to June 1 may upgrade their products
free of charge by downloading the software upgrade (Revision C.07.01) at HP Customer Care
"The introduction
of CoS capabilities builds on ProCurve Networking by HP's commitment to offer the
best value and investment protection to the customer," said Jan Bell, worldwide
marketing manager, ProCurve Networking by HP.
"HP ProCurve desktop
switches are the only desktop switches on the market that use Layer 4 information
to prioritize traffic right from the client, and these features are available
at no upgrade cost. HP is leading the way in bringing measurable, effective
QoS to network switching."
HP's new technology ensures
the security and priority of business-critical applications and servers, and
allows businesses to optimize their network investments by enabling companies
to deliver consistently exceptional service.
