HP Introduces Software Enhancements to ProCurve Switches, Delivering Investment Protection to its Customers

Lowers Prices on Switches

PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb.11, 2002 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today introduced software enhancements for the ProCurve Networking by HP Switch 4108gl and the ProCurve Networking by HP Switch 2500 series providing increased security, high availability and ease of use to customers. In addition to delivering more features to customers, HP is also lowering the price on several networking products.

HP is among the leaders in the industry to deliver 802.1x, an IEEE standard for network access security. As part of HP's continued focus on network security, 802.1x is a key component of maintaining network security by requiring the user to authenticate before accessing the LAN. HP port security with MAC lockdown protection further protects customers' networks by allowing network managers to configure specific authorized MAC addresses per port to control who is allowed to send inbound traffic through the specific ports.

HP is offering new management security capabilities for secure Telnet sessions. By adding Secure Shell (SSH), a de facto standard for securing remote access connections over IP networks, HP is offering customers the ability to encrypt all transmitted confidential data, including passwords, binary files and administrative commands.

HP further enhances the Switch 4108gl and Switch 2500 series by adding Rapid Convergence Spanning Tree, a new IEEE standard that offers fast detection and recovery from link failure. This feature is key to providing customers with a higher degree of network availability and physical link redundancy.

Control of bandwidth utilization has also been added to the feature set of the Switch 4108gl and Switch 2500 series. Using IEEE VLAN prioritization, 802.1p, customers now have the option to customize the priority of network traffic on a per port basis. ProCurve Networking by HP switches support eight priority levels per port.

HP is offering more features and lowering the cost for the ProCurve Networking by HP Switch 2524 from $1,309 to $1,099. HP is also lowering the price on its award winning ProCurve Networking by HP Switch 4000m from $2,379 to $1,999.

HP has now made available the HP ProCurve Network Management for OV-NT for $3,699. This software package integrates the management of ProCurve Networking by HP hubs, switches, and routing switches into the OpenView NT platform.
