HP Joins 10-Gigabit Ethernet Alliance

Alliance to Benefit from HP's Development Leadership and Expertise with Industry-standard Technologies

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 17, 2000 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that it is a charter member of the recently formed 10-Gigabit Ethernet Alliance.

The 10-Gigabit Ethernet Alliance is an open industry consortium dedicated to the development and promotion of next-generation Ethernet technology for Local Area Network (LAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) markets. Other alliance members include 3Com, Cisco Systems, Extreme Networks, Intel, Lucent Technologies, Nortel Networks, Sun Microsystems and Worldwide Packets.

"With the rise of the Internet, e-commerce, and e-business applications, HP understands the increasing needs enterprise and metropolitan customers have for more network bandwidth," said John McHugh, general manager of ProCurve Networking by HP. "As a charter member of the 10-Gigabit Ethernet Alliance, HP can contribute to the critical development of next-generation Ethernet technology. 10-Gigabit Ethernet will provide customers with the high bandwidth, simplicity of deployment and lower infrastructure costs they require for today's and tomorrow's applications."

HP has always taken a leadership position in developing new Ethernet technologies. HP demonstrated a 10-Gigabit transceiver prototype from HP Labs two years ago at the spring Networld+Interop trade show in Las Vegas. HP was also the first company to ship a copper Gigabit Ethernet switch module last October.

A natural extension of Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet, 10-Gigabit Ethernet in LAN applications will allow network managers to increase their network bandwidth from 10 megabits per second (Mbps) to 10,000 Mbps. They will achieve this performance while leveraging their existing Ethernet infrastructure and protecting their initial capital investment. ProCurve Networking by HP plans to introduce 10-Gigabit Ethernet connectivity to its LAN infrastructure products.

In addition, 10-Gigabit Ethernet further adds to the HP 9000 Enterprise Server family's ability to provide HP's next-generation data center, the E-serviceCenter, with instant global connectivity. With 10-Gigabit Ethernet capability, E-serviceCenters will provide Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Application Service Providers (ASPs) and Network Service Providers with the connection speed, bandwidth and simplicity they need to efficiently support the ever-increasing technological requirements of the Internet economy.
