HP Climbs to No. 4 Position in Total Ethernet Layer 2 Switch Market

ProCurve Networking by HP Tops Market Growth by More Than 10 Times, Continues Drive Toward Industry Leadership

PALO ALTO, Calif., Mar. 14, 2000 -- Hewlett-Packard Company, a leader in networking technologies, today announced it has surpassed Cabletron to become the fourth-largest worldwide vendor of Total Ethernet Layer 2 switch ports in the fourth calendar quarter of 1999, according to a report issued by Dell'Oro Group, a Portola Valley, Calif.-based research firm.

According to the report, ProCurve Networking by HP Total Ethernet Layer 2 switch port shipments grew at more than 10 times the market's pace from the third calendar quarter 1999 to the fourth, rising at a 37 percent rate vs. the market's 3 percent.

The fourth quarter also saw ProCurve Networking by HP realize significant growth in all Layer 2 switch categories: 10Mbit, 10/100 and Gigabit. In the worldwide 10/100 switch market, from the third calendar quarter to the fourth calendar quarter 1999, ProCurve Networking by HP grew nearly five times the market rate, realizing a 39 percent growth vs. a market growth of 8 percent.

For calendar 1999 overall, ProCurve Networking by HP grew 482 percent from calendar 1998, drastically outstripping the market's growth rate of 140 percent and vaulting HP from the No. 11 to the No. 4 position in the Layer 2 10/100 switch market.

HP also advanced in the Layer 2 Gigabit market, with 85 percent growth -- vs. 18 percent market growth -- from the third calendar quarter 1999 to the fourth.

ProCurve Networking by HP's worldwide growth was driven by the continued success of ProCurve Networking by HP Switch 4000m, 8000m, 2424m, 1600m and 2224. Additionally, continuing enhancements to these products to suit both large enterprise networks as well as smaller networks have bolstered the ProCurve Networking by HP ascension.

"ProCurve Networking by HP products continue to far outpace market growth because we provide customers with real value through industry-leading technology, service and support, a lifetime limited warranty, and unmatched price and performance," said John McHugh, general manager of ProCurve Networking by HP. "It is that relentless focus that is fueling our drive toward industry leadership."
