ProCurve Networking by HP to Optimize Networks with EDGE Fabric

PALO ALTO, Calif., June 10, 2004 - ProCurve Networking by HP today announced plans to develop a new class of products designed to optimize network infrastructure. Using enterprise networking technology and associated rights acquired from Riverstone Networks on June 7, 2004, ProCurve will develop the ProCurve EDGE Fabric - a family of Ethernet local area network devices designed to optimize networks based on the ProCurve Adaptive EDGE Architecture.

The EDGE Fabric is designed to be the best choice to interconnect intelligent edge devices, providing a cost-effective, high-bandwidth and resilient connection. With the EDGE Fabric, ProCurve will offer customers a wider choice of options for designing, migrating and deploying high-performance edge networks, while at the same time meeting the challenges of current and emerging applications, including security, mobility and convergence, as well as voice over IP applications.

"The success of the ProCurve Networking Adaptive EDGE Architecture has driven demand for a new class of high-speed, redundant and resilient network edge fabric - the ProCurve EDGE Fabric," said John McHugh, vice president and general manager, ProCurve Networking by HP. "We will provide our customers with increased choice and flexibility in designing their network to best meet their individual needs for advanced network functionality."

As emerging applications become pervasive, more functionality and control is moving to the edge of the network to effectively support users while making efficient use of the network resources. With the ProCurve Adaptive EDGE Architecture, network decisions - such as network access, traffic prioritization, traffic flows and bandwidth optimization - are implemented at the edge of the network, where users connect.

The requirements of these emerging applications can be met only by intelligence and control at the edge, which reduces the need for centralized intelligence in the network core. The ProCurve EDGE Fabric strives to be the optimal combination of affordability, performance, reliability and scalability to interconnect intelligent edge devices, including switches and access points.

ProCurve will offer EDGE Fabric and traditional core solutions to interconnect the intelligent edge. The EDGE Fabric will interoperate with customers' existing network infrastructures allowing for a seamless migration to a complete Adaptive EDGE Architecture.

"We are pleased to see our leading-edge enterprise technology further developed and brought to market by a strong brand like HP's ProCurve Networking," said Oscar Rodriguez, chief executive officer, Riverstone Networks. "Designed for high-performance and cost-effectiveness, our technology lends itself well to the ProCurve Adaptive EDGE Architecture."

Later this year, ProCurve plans to announce more detailed plans and specific products and solutions resulting from its acquisition of networking technology and associated rights from Riverstone Networks. Upon release, the new products and solutions resulting from this acquisition will be sold under the ProCurve Networking brand through existing channels.

The ProCurve Networking business unit of HP is a supplier of enterprise networking solutions that enable customers to build secure, mobile, multi-service networks.
