Customer testimonial

"In our business, the ProCurve network provides the foundation for superior guest services. Increased network performance at slot machines and the front desk translates to increased revenues. We estimate the ProCurve solution helps us save 10 to 15 seconds during guest check-in and check-out, which translates to a savings of nearly 30 hours a day just in one department."

Customer at a glance

The Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino, complete with waterways, gondolas, frescos and replicas of Venetian landmarks, is the $1.5 billion Las Vegas resort built by entrepreneur Sheldon G. Adelson. The hotel offers 4049 suites, a 120,000-square-foot casino, shopping along a replicated Grand Canal and 18 world-class restaurants. With the addition of a 3,000 suite hotel located adjacent to The Venetian (scheduled for groundbreaking in summer 2004), the Venetian will be the largest hotel and convention complex under one roof.

Highlights

Providing world-class guest service in the competitive Las Vegas resort-casino industry can be a challenge for a large, service-focused organization, requiring a sophisticated network infrastructure that is reliable, efficient, expandable to meet future business needs, and safeguarded against security threats. The Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas addresses these issues with its comprehensive ProCurve Networking by HP solution.

Since the 1999 opening, this $1.5 billion mega-resort has benefited from a high-performance network that has helped increase revenue, decrease labor costs, and provide staff with valuable time savings through simplified network management. The Venetian has also gained superb wireless support for its growing mobile uses, such as portable front desks, as well as support for convergent applications, including a complex surveillance camera system and music over Internet Protocol (IP). The scalability of ProCurve Networking solutions makes them the optimal choice for The Venetian, enabling it to leverage its investment into the future as it continues to expand.

Venetian offers world-class guest services with ProCurve Networking solution

The Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino's network infrastructure accommodates everything from slot machines and high-speed Internet access to all guest rooms, to mobile front desks and new Voice over IP (VoIP) technologies throughout its 3,000+ suites, casino, shops, restaurants and convention center. A complete local area network (LAN) solution, from the hardware to the network management software, the ProCurve network has the flexibility to support anticipated expansion efforts including the recent completion of a new 1,000-room tower and the upcoming construction of an additional 3,000-room tower.

"Our ProCurve network solution is straightforward, easy to manage and requires minimal support," said Steve Vollmer, director of information technology at The Venetian. "The network also provides a reliable infrastructure with enough flexibility to support our continuing building expansion projects."

The Venetian's network utilizes ProCurve Networking solutions based on the ProCurve Networking Adaptive EDGE Architecture™. HP ProCurve 8000m switches create the backbone of its LAN, extending throughout the hotel's two towers and convention center. With an integrated HP network management solution, the system is easily managed by IT staff through a simple Web browser. The network encompasses two LAN connections to each of the 4049 suites, 2,475 slot machines, and 120 game tables, making it one of the most sophisticated network installations in operation at any of the major Las Vegas resorts.

"In our business, the ProCurve network provides the foundation for superior guest services," said Vollmer. "Increased network performance at slot machines and the front desk translates to increased revenues. We estimate the ProCurve solution helps us save 10 to 15 seconds during guest check-in and check-out, which translates to a savings of nearly 30 hours a day just in one department."

Convergence-ready, scalable network supports Venetian's current and future needs

By combining all kinds of traffic—data, voice, video—onto one network infrastructure, enterprises can simplify and streamline network resources while positioning their network for long-term viability. With convergence-readiness and built-in scalability, The Venetian's ProCurve network supports all traffic types and delivers connectivity over the most affordable and easy-to-manage infrastructure available. The large-scale music and paging system utilizes the multi-service network. Vollmer explains that "Music over IP" converts music to IP, sends it over the fiber optics to the next HP switch and then out to the speaker system.

Based on the ProCurve Networking Adaptive EDGE Architecture™, the network uses a combination of HP ProCurve 8000m and 4000m switches. The HP ProCurve Switch 8000m delivers scalable Ethernet switching solutions and HP's special switch-meshing technology, providing network managers with load-balancing and high-availability backbone technology without a price premium. It also ensures peak network performance, providing additional control to ensure network uptime and performance. The HP ProCurve Switch 4000m, a modular 10/100 Gigabit desktop switch, provides The Venetian with redundant links to the various wiring closets and is the ideal solution for expandable, low-cost migration to 10/100 Gigabit switching. ProCurve Networking simplifies network management with a Web-browser interface that enables management from any PC on the network.

The Venetian also enjoys superb wireless support for increasing mobile use such as "roll-a-desks"—four portable front desks that are literally "rolled around" to different locations to expedite large group check in or check out. These key resources are used for groups of up to 3,000 persons to enable their own private front desk service. With ProCurve Networking Adaptive EDGE Architecture™, Vollmer and his team have peace of mind that the network is safeguarded against security threats often associated with increasing mobile use with several layers of built-in security. By creating intelligence throughout the network to the edge where the user connects, enterprises are able to mitigate risks more effectively as well as cost-effectively partition the network to create zones of similar users with similar access needs.

As The Venetian plans for future expansions as well as increased advanced technology use, it can rest assured that its high-performance network will ensure resort-hotel-casino services are operating reliably and efficiently. "When we opened this building with ProCurve, we were convinced that what they had come up with was the winner," says Vollmer. "It's been hugely successful for us."
