Harrison has 14 elementary schools, three middle schools, two high schools, one alternative school, and two charter schools, all of which serve a student population diverse in economic backgrounds and rich in ethnic pride. Harrison celebrates all cultures and strives to implement programs that teach the benefits and advantages of working together in a diverse society.

Highlights

Today, academic institutions are investing in advanced technologies to give students the experiences they need to operate in the 'real world.' As sophisticated communications and increased mobility continue to transform the network infrastructure, educators must have a realistic strategy for improving information technology systems. The Harrison School District in Colorado Springs, Colorado relies on ProCurve Networking by HP to support next-generation applications and secure wireless access to deliver leading educational opportunities to its students.

Harrison School District serves 1500 staff members, 10,000 students and 22 schools. Harrison's 3500-node ProCurve network provides a high level of security for its growing mobile applications, as well as convergence-readiness if Harrison plans to implement Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

The ProCurve Networking by HP solution, based on the ProCurve Networking Adaptive EDGE Architecture™ , provides the ultimate scalable solution for Harrison's demanding and evolving computing requirements including enhanced virtual local area network (VLAN) capabilities for secure wireless access, readiness to deploy future applications, and an affordable solution. As a result, ProCurve Networking is helping Harrison students take advantage of the benefits of the latest technology.

Enhanced learning opportunities with secure, mobile access

Harrison School District supports advanced mobility applications, including increased wireless access to its network. With the help of ProCurve networks, Harrison plans to implement mobile classrooms, which include wireless PC access to network resources. Since school PCs no longer need to be wired, they can travel from classroom to classroom creating enhanced learning opportunities. This is especially important to accommodate special education teachers who travel between schools with laptops to serve their students with special needs.

With increased wireless traffic comes a need for heightened security to prevent unauthorized access, or even worse, network attacks. Through the ProCurve Networking wireless VLAN capabilities and Linux based VPN Gateways, Harrison segments wireless traffic to separate it from the rest of the network. Harrison also uses the ProCurve Networking advanced, easy-to-deploy VLAN functionality in its wired network. Both of these capabilities prevent students from gaining access to or manipulating staff information such as grades and testing information data.

Affordable, flexible gigabit growth

Chief Network Engineer Jeff Rachwitz joined Harrison several years ago. At that time, a 3Com network infrastructure was in place. When a technology bond gave Rachwitz the resources for a network upgrade, he and his team evaluated the leading vendors, including ProCurve Networking by HP, 3Com, Cisco, Foundry and Extreme. The team felt most comfortable going with ProCurve Networking based on the company's legacy as a market leader in innovation and development of high performance products and solutions. Harrison needed a one-gigabit uplink between each of its switches, but would have to pay a significant amount to other vendors for the necessary module. ProCurve Networking's affordable products provided Harrison the same as the single uplink from another vendor, plus gave it 24 10/100 ports for added flexibility and future growth.

Harrison uses a combination of an HP ProCurve Switch 9304m at the core of its district-wide network, HP ProCurve 4108gl switches for core functionality in each school, and numerous HP ProCurve 2524 switches in the wiring closet. With the ProCurve Networking solution, the Harrison network infrastructure seamlessly connects all 21 school campuses and sites.

The HP ProCurve Switch 9300 series offers layer 3 and layer 4 capabilities, a Web interface that allows configuration of switches from any browser on the network, automatic routing switch failover and speed to support future growth. HP ProCurve Switch 4108gl provides layer 2 and layer 3 capabilities, wire-speed switching of intra-module traffic, and ease of scalability for network growth. HP ProCurve Switch 2524 stackables are used throughout the wiring closets, giving Harrison high-performance, affordable switching with high-speed uplinks.

ProCurve Networking enabled Harrison to deploy the network upgrade with minimal to no downtime. Rachwitz explained that because of the zero downtime and ease of migration, most users were unaware of changes to the network due to its seamless and reliable implementation. This was of prime importance to Harrison where any amount of downtime could have adverse effects on day-to-day operations across the district.
