Highlights

Continuously seeking avenues of improvement in quality, efficiency, and reliability, the city of Alcoa Tennessee's information services team deployed a high-speed network infrastructure based on the ProCurve Networking Adaptive EDGE Architecture™ solution. Implemented to connect county 911 offices, the ProCurve enterprise network has been expanded to provide high-speed links between all public buildings for Alcoa, the Blount County Sheriff Department, and the city of Marysville.

The Alcoa IT managers selected the ProCurve Networking solution for its reliability, affordability, ease of configuration, and a wide feature set—including gigabit speeds and support for VLANs. The high-performance ProCurve network enables Alcoa to more effectively communicate with all constituents and share timely public safety information. ProCurve Networking's solution meets Alcoa's technology needs for today, and also provides scalability and flexibility that ensures the city can extend their return on investment well into the future.

Connect resources with quality, efficiency, and reliability

Incorporated in 1919 by the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA), the city of Alcoa encompasses a large commercial area, including the McGhee Tyson airport that serves greater Knoxville and Eastern Tennessee. Recently, three major agencies in a 10-mile radius—the city of Alcoa, the Blount County Sheriff Department, and the city of Marysville—implemented a more secure, reliable solution for sharing public safety information and data.

Alcoa deployed the ProCurve Networking solution to help increase efficiencies of the county's 911 services. Every government building—including 911 offices, the electric company, water, fire department, libraries, and the department of motor vehicles—is connected via fiber optic cable and leverages the benefits of a highly secure ProCurve network to quickly communicate critical information.

"Once we decided to go with the ProCurve Networking solution, we scrapped a lot of our other equipment and deployed HP across the board," says Creasy. "The combination of top performing products and unmatched levels of service made HP a one-stop-shop for the city of Alcoa."

Time savings and efficiency increases

The ProCurve network has provided the Alcoa police department with tremendous benefits.

Now, each time a 911 call is made, a report is generated about the date, time, location, and nature of the incident. With the ProCurve network, police officers and detectives simply log-in to the network and download 911 files in seconds over gigabit-speed connections.

"Our Blount County detectives are thrilled about the network. What used to require drive time and a full day of waiting for line-up information can now be done in minutes, thanks to the ProCurve network," says Justin McClure, IS technician for the city of Alcoa. "Transferring these files used to be a pain; now it's a breeze."

Alcoa has deployed a combination of ProCurve Networking switches at the core and at the edge of the network, with high-speed gigabit converters at all endpoints. The HP ProCurve Switch 5300xl serves as the core switch to configure VLANs. The Alcoa network has HP ProCurve 2524 switches acting as hubs at the edge of the network in outlying buildings, and HP ProCurve 4108gl and 4104gl switches at the police departments.

The city will also soon support wireless connectivity for police officers via the laptops they carry in patrol cars. Alcoa's ProCurve Networking Adaptive EDGE Architecture-based solution ensures that security is controlled from the core to the edge of the network so Alcoa managers can rest assured that their mobility and security needs are addressed today and prepared for the future.

"We have everything connected to the network, and now we can actually talk interagency. Sharing information is so much easier," McClure explains. "We also implemented a security system with password-protected access for the governmental software package."

A flexible foundation for the future

The city of Alcoa will continue to improve productivity with the ProCurve network. Planned enhancements include a new public works service center, facilities upgrades, and a number of new buildings to be connected to the network. There is also a new graphical mapping system being developed by the electric company that will exchange information and data on the network to more quickly pinpoint system problems. ProCurve's network has provided city managers with the confidence that, as the city grows, their solution will be flexible, adaptable and easy-to-manage so they won't need to overhaul their technology infrastructure anytime soon.

"We selected ProCurve's networking solution based on value and HP's commitment to excellent service," says Melissa Tidwell, IS technician for the city of Alcoa. "There's so much we can do now that we're connected. Each day that passes we're finding new ways to use our connectivity to improve the way we've done things in the past, and prepare for the future."
