One of the most significant challenges facing school districts today is the need to provide secure network access for students and teachers, while at the same time maintaining the flexibility to support current and future requirements on the network. The Appleton Area School District (AASD) in Appleton, Wisconsin met and exceeded all these objectives with its recent deployment of a ProCurve Networking Adaptive EDGE Architecture™ solution.

When the school district needed to upgrade its network infrastructure, the community formed a
consortium of municipal and education organizations—the Appleton Area Metropolitan Fiber Optic Network (AAMFON)—to serve as a steering committee for the district's data and voice communication needs. This group was responsible for making the decision to install fiber optic cable in the community.
The Appleton Area School District acknowledged the need to deploy and support a converged, mobile, highly secure network for the school district. The AASD recognized ProCurve Networking solutions would enable the district to securely provide users full mobility while maintaining quality of service (QoS) levels and flexibility for future network enhancements. With security and adaptability inherent, Appleton's enhanced wireless functionality could be provided.
The new Appleton Area School District network is configured in a star topology, with 30 network segments. Appleton runs 100 megabits to the desktop, with gigabit fiber between all locations, providing faster access to critical data. The new network connects 16 elementary schools, four middle schools, three high schools, four administrative locations, and three other facilities in a seven-kilometer radius. With 75 HP servers, 300 HP printers, 3,000 workstations and a multitude of ProCurve Networking switches deployed, Network Infrastructure Security Specialist Brent Braun considers the Appleton Area School District an "HP shop."
As part of the new network, the Appleton Area School District implemented a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) system for the district's schools. The old phone infrastructure had 900 phones patched together via 12 different types of phone systems. The ProCurve Networking solution provides the AASD with a universal voice infrastructure that will support the district's VoIP project by simplifying and streamlining the voice system.The converged network also has the capability to handle a variety of traffic types, such as the transmission of VoIP and data, while continuing to deliver consistent quality and remain reliable for teachers and students. During a typical school day, it's possible for a computer workstation to be used by a student in the morning and the principal in the afternoon.
