HP's 9000 Superdome Server and xp512 disk array achieve world's fastest single-system data warehousing benchmark result
December 17, 2001—Hewlett-Packard Company has achieved the world's fastest, single-system
TPC-H 3 TB benchmark result, continuing to showcase superior
performance capabilities across multiple UNIX® benchmarks for its high-end
HP 9000 Superdome server, Oracle9i Database and HP XP512 disk array
storage.
The 3 TB TPC-H benchmark result of 17,908.4 queries per hour (QphH)
at 3 TB delivers a price performance of $569/QphH at 3 TB (1) and
provides a clear indicator of HP's strength in data warehousing
technology. This result is 66% faster than the best reported SUN 3 TB
TPC-H result (2) and showcases both the superior capabilities of HP
Superdome server and the outstanding performance of HP's XP512 disk
array storage.
"Performance and scalability are critical factors for data warehousing
customers," said Charles Rozwat, executive vice president, Server
Technologies, Oracle Corporation. "Businesses rely on Oracle and HP
to be able to rapidly extract patterns and trends from terabytes of
transactional data. This is a truly remarkable TPC-H performance result
and we are delighted to be able to demonstrate the exceptional value
we deliver for our customers."
The combination of Superdome's processing speed, I/O bandwidth and
overall capacity and throughput make it an excellent fit for exceptional
data warehousing performance.
The performance and reliability of HP's XP/512 disk array technology is
reflected in the record-breaking load time for the database of 9.36
hours, 62% faster than SUN, and less than half the time of NCR. HP's
XP/512 disk array has contributed to the record breaking TPC-H result
using RAID 0/1. This optimizes not only performance but also
reliability, important for real world environments. EMC is not visible in
this competitive benchmark arena.
HP's TPC-H result is unique in achieving industry-leading performance
using a single system with 64 processors versus the 128 processor
cluster solutions used by Sun and NCR (3) to obtain their 3 TB benchmark
results. This delivers significant cost savings, illustrated by the HP
Superdome server's price/ performance figures of 54% and 42% lower
than SUN and NCR respectively. The HP 9000 Superdome server with HP
XP512 storage and Oracle9i Database becomes price/performance
leader in the 3 TB category.
"The results speak for themselves", said Mark Hudson, worldwide
marketing manager, HP Business System and Technology Organization,
"We have announced 3 world-leading Superdome benchmarks with HP
XP 512 and VA7100 disk arrays and Oracle9i Database in the last 30
days. These benchmarks, across several different types of workloads,
showcase Superdome's versatility and power as a high-end UNIX server
as well as HP's superior storage solutions. We are pleased to continue
to serve our customers with the highest performance and the best
possible value on our servers and storage"
About TPC-H
According to the Transaction Processing Council, the TPC-H benchmark
evaluates a composite performance metric (QphH@size) that measures
the performance of various decision support systems by the execution of
sets of complex queries against a standard database under controlled
conditions. The TPC-H queries are designed to give answers to real-world
business questions, simulate generated ad-hoc queries, include a
rich breadth of operators and selectivity constraints and generate
intensive activity on the database server. The TPC believes that
comparisons of TPC-H results measured against different database sizes
are misleading and discourages such comparisons.
