Superdome breaks own record performance & extends value for enterprise solutions

Faster SAP R/3 benchmark result and strong SAP superdome customer acceptance

February 11, 2002 – Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that it has smashed it's own record for the world's fastest 3-tier SAP R/3 Assemble-To-Order (ATO) Standard Application Benchmark running on the HP 9000 Superdome Server, HP-UX 11i, and Oracle9i. Once again, HP Superdome has illustrated why it is the best platform for running SAP. This can be seen in four key areas:

  1. HP's record SAP R/3 3-tier ATO standard benchmark
  2. HP beating Sun and IBM in new Gartner report on SAP
  3. ERP (including SAP) is the largest application area for superdome
  4. Customer Success stories

  1. HP's New World's Record SAP R/3 3-tier ATO Standard Benchmark
Superdome just flew past its own world record 3-tier SAP R/3 ATO (assemble-to-order) benchmark by demonstrating throughput of 144,090 fully processed assembly orders/hour with 64 processors.1 This demanding ATO SAP benchmark was 11% over the previous record moving from 130,570 fully processed assembly orders/hour to a new world record of 144,090 This record result further demonstrates the scalability of Superdome to 64 processors. The improvement was achieved by optimizing SAP and HP-UX on Superdome.

This new level of SAP performance illustrates the powerful combination of SAP and Superdome. When it comes to large, demanding SAP workloads, Superdome has the raw power to get the job done. These record levels of performance provide customers with the headroom for unexpected loads and the confidence that as their business grows their SAP solution will have the capability to handle this growth.

  2. New Gartner Report on Mission-Critical High-Availability SAP Systems Selects HP over Sun and IBM
Gartner recently issued a report on mission-critical high-availability SAP systems focusing on the required software, hardware, and consulting services and support services required for a robust, mission-critical SAP solution. HP with its Unix systems was selected over Sun and IBM as having the overall best Unix SAP infrastructure. This illustrates the strength of HP's offerings ranging from the server hardware to consulting services. An abstract for the report entitled Enterprise Guide to Gartner's High-Availability System Model for SAP dated December 20, 2001 can be found at:

  3. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and SAP is Superdome's Largest Application Area
Superdome applications range all the way from designing cars to recording cell phone billing information to scheduling airlines to running enterprises with SAP. Of the wide spectrum of applications, ERP (and within ERP, SAP) is the single largest application area. Superdome has the proven performance for SAP, the proven high availability and reliability needed by enterprises, and the proven installed base. In short, it's enterprise power, enterprise reliability, and enterprise acceptance.

SAP is the world's leading provider of e-business software solutions with a broad spectrum of products and services. SAP R/3 has the power and scalability to run the largest enterprises. This is illustrated by the support for 64 Superdome processors.

  4. SAP Superdome Customer Testimonials
Customers trust HP and SAP and run their business on SAP software and Superdome hardware. Here are some examples of customer success stories that illustrate this:

    VELUX

"We selected HP's powerful Superdome server as the foundation of our SAP solution providing the needed capacity as well as added efficiency," says Eric Plesner of VELUX, a Danish manufacturer of windows, skylights and solar power units sold worldwide. "With the HP Superdome, additional HP servers, storage and backup, we have a SAP solution that is powerful and secure for our always-on business."

    General Mills

"Cereal plants run 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. 'Always On' is a requirement for our business processes in support of the plants, distribution centers and sales offices. The HP 9000 Superdomes in our SAP R/3 landscape provide the computing power and the reliability to ensure 'Always On.'"

    Mike Meinz
    Director of Information Technology
    General Mills

    Burton Snowboards

"As creator of the best snowboarding equipment in the world, Burton snowboards is enjoying significant growth year after year. We have a partitioned HP Superdome, with HP-UX 11i operating system and iCOD (instant capacity on demand), at the hub of our entire SAP implementation. This optimized configuration enables our IT infrastructure to expand to meet our needs. We evaluated other high-end servers and decided that Superdome offered the best overall solution for our growing company."

    Scott Koerner
    Computer Operations Manager
    Burton Snowboards

Summary

Superdome application leadership is being extended as substantiated by the faster SAP R/3 Standard ATO benchmark, overall SAP leadership and SAP customer acceptance. Based on this, HP Superdome has illustrated why it is the ideal platform for running SAP.

About the SAP standard ATO application benchmark

SAP's standard ATO application benchmark is designed to realistically represent the real-world demands of supply-chain management and manufacturing installations. ATO imitates the typical system load expected in a sales order-related manufacturing environment, such as PC assembly.
