HP HIPPI connectivity solutions for the technical enterprise

It is a world dominated by big data

Faster systems and the availability of denser storage media have resulted in a rapid increase in the size of data sets. In today's technical data center, the ability to share large amounts of data quickly and efficiently is a necessity. The HP PCI HIPPI network interface adapter offers the most efficient, high performance LAN solution for the Technical Enterprise. HIPPI LAN technology provides an astounding 1600 Mbits/sec. bi-directional peak transfer rate. HP's Serial HIPPI solution is based on an advanced fiber optic media technology. The advantages over older copper-based parallel media include elimination of noise susceptibility and greatly improved transmission distances (up to 10 km). Industry standard TCP/IP protocols provide ease of use with any network application that utilizes TCP/IP (for example: rcp, ftp, and NFS).

An industry proven HIPPI solution

The HIPPI protocol was originally designed by scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratories in 1986. The initial standard was ratified in 1988. Today, HIPPI technology is deployed in most of the Fortune 250 companies -- high-performance technical data centers. HIPPI may be used in a point-to-point or switched fabric topology.

To insure best-in-class interoperability, HP's HIPPI LAN technology is certified in ODS/Essential Networks -- HIPPI interoperability lab (the industry-leading HIPPI switch manufacturer).

Typical HIPPI LAN applications include:

  • High-performance multi-vendor server to server communications
  • Radar and satellite telemetry
  • Visual simulation
  • Data mining
  • High-performance network backup / restore
  • Medical imaging
Features

Features of the HP PCI HIPPI LAN adapter include:

  • Dual bus-mastering DMA channels for simultaneous read-and-write operations integrated with an Embedded RISC processor for full scatter/gather support
  • Up to 132 MB/sec. PCI burst transfer rate
  • Distance to peer of up to 500 meters with 50 micron multi-mode fiber, 200 meters with 62.5 micron fiber
  • Full TCP/IP support, RFC 1374 compliant
  • Large 65,280 byte maximum transfer unit (MTU) for improved efficiency and performance
  • Low-level (raw) HIPPI character-driver API
  • ANSI standards compliance:
    • HIPPI-PH (ANSI X3.183-1991)
    • HIPPI-FP (ANSI X3.210-1992)
    • HIPPI-LE (ANSI X3.218-1993)
    • HIPPI-SC (ANSI X3.222-1993)
  • Guaranteed compatibility with ODS/Essential Networks-- HIPPI LAN switch products
