(2) New peripherals for the HP 1000 by Steve Fryncko Since its introduction in 1966, the HP 1000 product line has been well supported by having newer peripherals continually made available for it. In 1986 a Senior Vice President stated that the HP 1000 line would be manufactured until at least the year 2000. Later, this commitment and support commitments which have become legendary in the industry, were reiterated by other HP executives. However, as we approach 2000 and the planned discontinuance of the product line, there is increasing difficulty qualifying and providing supported peripherals. To keep the HP 1000 line viable, HP has enlisted the help of selected third parties to provide qualified peripherals to HP 1000 customers. One vendor, Monterey Bay Communications, offers an extensive line of refurbished HP 1000 equipment - including SPUs, CPUs, I/O cards and peripherals - that are identical to the original products - with exceptional delivery and at very reasonable prices. Two other vendors - Bering Technologies and Gedanken - provide new peripherals that have been proven, using HP-approved test criteria, to work on the HP 1000. Recently, Bering Technologies ("Bering") and Gedanken introduced products that they have tested for use on the HP 1000. Bering offers a 4.5 GB disk drive SCSI disk under the Bering product number 800H - Option 04. They also offer an 8 GB DDS II DAT tape (the HP C1528K) drive under their product number 800H - Option 42. Although a three-tape 24 GB DDS III drive exists, there are no plans to test it for the HP 1000. Gedanken offers the ZIP1K product which is a family of SCSI connected mass storage products for the HP 1000. The fixed disk in the ZIP1K is a 4-9 GB. Removable disks (shirt pocket size) of either 100 or 250 MB are available with the ZIP1K, as well as Gedanken's "RTE Explorer", a program which offers easy "point-click" access to RTE files on a ZIP1K cartridge mounted in a Windows NT,Windows 95, or Windows 98 system. As this occurs, even after the discontinuance of the line in the year 2000, this information will be made available to interested HP 1000 customers via our Website - "www.hp.com/esy/related/rte/".
