The HP Migration Competency Center and HP Enterprise Services, in addition to online tools and resources, are available to support you in each phase:

  • Partner support: Over 14,000 applications are now available on HP Integrity servers
  • Extensive services: HP and HP authorized resellers can help you to transition to simpler, more cost-effective and more capable HP Integrity systems

Awareness

The Awareness phase provides a structured approach for transferring applications from your legacy HP systems to HP Integrity. The path you choose for your transition will be based on factors such as cost, complexity and future business needs. The outcome of the Awareness phase is a decision on next steps, based on a sound business case.

HP resources such as the HP Migration Competency Center provide a powerful set of tools and services to help customers make sound choices. They can help you answer important questions such as these:

  • What is the total cost of ownership of evolving to HP Integrity servers?
  • Will upgrades or version changes be needed to transfer to Integrity?
  • Will applications and custom code run unchanged on HP Integrity?
  • What is the simplest, lowest risk, lowest cost path to transfer applications to HP Integrity servers?

Based on the answers to these questions, customers plan and execute their transition strategy. It will generally include infrastructure projects that apply one or more of these strategies:

  • Transfer existing applications from legacy systems to HP Integrity servers without re-architecting the solution stack. This will be a common approach for Oracle database and SAP landscapes, for instance.
  • Consolidate multiple application instances onto fewer servers to reduce TCO, taking advantage of virtualization, and leverage powerful Intel® Itanium® processors to reduce processor count.
  • Re-architect the solution environment and install it on the new server platform.

Customer Success

"The upgrade to HP Integrity server blades under OpenVMS has enabled us to accommodate new gates and new control functions so that we can better handle peak travel volumes while still meeting our 45-minute delivery requirement."

Planning

The Planning phase defines the tasks, investments and schedule to execute the chosen transition strategy. It is based on the environment and TCO analysis done during the Awareness phase. Making the transition as seamless to your business operations as possible requires a good blueprint. This usually starts with more detailed analysis of business priorities.

Key steps include:

  1. Taking inventory of your current environment to identify key applications and revisions, server platforms, operating system releases and storage capacity.
  2. Determining requirements for the new environment, taking into account the new capabilities of HP Integrity servers, blades, HP-UX, and Storageworks.

During this phase, you will develop a transition plan that defines IT requirements, service level objectives, required functionality or ISV solution stack, transition schedule and available resources

Customer Success

"Given the performance benefits that we saw in our smaller application migrations, we were very confident in the price-performance benefits of Integrity servers [with Dual-Core Intel® Itanium® processors]. It’s a logical platform upgrade from PA-RISC."

—Tod Wiederholt, Manager of Systems Development for RelayHealth, McKesson Corporation

Design

The During the Design phase, you will create the plan to transition from HP 9000 servers to Integrity servers or blades, and transfer your applications. Key elements of the transition plan include:

  • Sizing the systems to address your workload requirements, using HP reference architectures and solution block designs as starting points
  • Clustering workloads so that Integrity virtualization can help you improve utilization
  • Identify the tools and methods to move your data and applications to the target servers

HP has developed tools and techniques that help customers design a smooth, low risk, transition to HP Integrity servers. HP and HP authorized resellers can assist you to design your transition plan. Ask your account manager for more information.
