The Awareness phase provides a structured process for customers to determine their transition approach for transferring applications from IBM AS/400 to
HP Integrity. This decision will be based on several factors, such as cost, complexity and future business needs. The outcome of the Awareness phase is a
decision on next steps, based on a sound business case.
HP resources such as the HP Migration Competency Center provide a rich and powerful set of tools and services to help customers make sound choices.
They can help you answer important questions such as these:
- What is the 3-5 year total cost of ownership savings for transferring applications to HP Integrity?
- Will applications and custom code compiled for the AS/400 run unchanged on HP Integrity?
- Are their applications which should be maintained on AS/400 servers for the time being, and then supplanted with brand new applications?

From the answers determined above, customers plan and execute their AS/400 transition strategy. It will generally include infrastructure projects that apply one or more of these strategies:
- Transfer existing applications from AS/400 systems to HP Integrity servers without re-architecting the solution stack. This will be a common approach for internally developed AS/400 applications with existing source code.
- Consolidate multiple application instances onto fewer servers to reduce TCO, taking advantage of virtualization, and leverage powerful Itanium processors to reduce processor count.
- Deploy servers with a mix of HP 9000 and Integrity processors to extend the life of cell-based HP 9000 servers and simplify failover migration strategies with HP ServiceGuard.
- Re-architect the solution environment and install it on the new server platform. This usually occurs after the other strategies has been executed.
