Java™ technology has taken the IT industry by storm.
Introduced in the mid-’90s and quickly adopted by
nearly all major operating system developers, this
highly productive application environment lends itself
especially well to the distributed environment of the
Internet. NonStop Server for Java, part of open software
for HP NonStop systems, is a Java Virtual Machine
(JVM) designed for the NonStop platform. It started
shipping in 1997 and is currently in its fourth release.
In general, Java programs are portable and interoperable,
making application development and
deployment faster and easier. These characteristics apply
regardless of the computing platform on which
the applications are deployed. But when a Java
program runs on the NonStop platform,
something special happens: It can
inherit the fundamentals that have
long made NonStop technology
the leading choice for mission-critical
applications in a broad
range of industries. With no
application code changes, the
application suddenly takes
advantage of the continuous
availability and linear scalability
of the NonStop platform, along
with its unrivaled data integrity.
Key customers worldwide—more than 500 of them, with over
1,200 systems—are already reaping
the competitive benefits of Java
technology on the NonStop platform. In
travel, supply chain, and publishing, the
combination supports innovative uses of BEA
WebLogic Server software, which is built on the J2EE
infrastructure. In healthcare, Java is used to
Web-enable Pathway applications, which can permit
controlled access to medical records in a variety of
ways, including via convenient handheld devices.
Similar data access applications are being deployed in
telecommunications and financial services.
Customers are using NonStop Server for Java
software to integrate existing applications and
derive new functionality. NonStop Server for Java is
integrated with all critical subsystems, including
NonStop SQL and Enscribe databases, Pathway,
NonStop CORBA, NonStop Tuxedo, iTP WebServer,
and NonStop SOAP software. The ability to
leverage packaged applications in the NonStop
server environment is also viewed as a
significant benefit.
“Java makes it easier and faster to do new NonStop
system development,” noted Jim Peters, senior
product manager for J2EE and CORBA at HP’s
NonStop Enterprise Division. “There are
literally hundreds of tools available to
assist in the development and management
of Java applications.”
Most of these tools run on
development platforms like
Microsoft® Windows NT®
and/or Linux® platforms.
Applications developed with
these tools on these platforms
can readily be moved
to the NonStop platform.
And some of the tools—among them BEA WebLogic
Workshop, Borland JBuilder,
and the open source Eclipse
product—are already available
for use with NonStop systems.
The future of NonStop Server for
Java software is exciting, with Version 4.2
scheduled for release by the end of 2004,
Version 5 slated for 2005, and a host of new tools in
the pipeline. Of course, the product will take full
advantage of the performance boost offered by the
new NonStop S88000 server and beyond. Peters
concluded, “The combination of new Java technology,
