“PROGNOSIS offered an elegant solution that enabled us to seamlessly integrate our HP NonStop servers and OpenView system to provide a single, real-time view of our systems and platforms.”

Robert Cline, VP of production systems, bcgi

Integrated Research extends PROGNOSIS to HP OpenView suite

Having a consolidated, up-to-the-second view of critical customer and business data across the enterprise delivers a powerful competitive advantage, but the story doesn’t end there. It’s also important to understand the role that systems management and automation play in the real-time environment. Careful monitoring—combined with the automation of disk space allocation, hardware and software failure notification, data path switching, and similar tasks—is essential to keeping the Adaptive Enterprise running smoothly.

This is the job that Integrated Research has been handling for the past 16 years with its cross-platform PROGNOSIS performance management software. Already the world’s largest supplier of systems and application management solutions for HP NonStop servers, Integrated Research recently took another giant step forward by integrating PROGNOSIS with the HP OpenView suite.

The newly released product is called PROGNOSIS Smart Plug In (SPI) for HP OpenView. “PROGNOSIS SPI for HP OpenView was developed in direct response to customer demand,” noted Gary Stearns, senior product manager and technical consultant at Integrated Research. “Many organizations that use PROGNOSIS to manage their NonStop systems also run HP OpenView software in other parts of their environment. Our customers wanted the ability to extend the advanced metrics and monitoring capabilities of PROGNOSIS across the total environment. The SPI makes this a simple process.”

Advanced monitoring and management

PROGNOSIS SPI for HP OpenView delivers the following advantages:
  • Real-time metrics and performance alerts for NonStop servers, including hardware and software
  • Monitoring of critical middleware and business application components, such as Pathway, Tuxedo, WebSphere MQ, JVM, WebLogic, iTP WebServer, BASE24, and OpenCall INS
  • Automatic population of service views to the component level for both applications and system infrastructure
  • Event management with customizable filtering, message grouping, and service identification
  • Preconfigured thresholds for performance and availability, all fully customizable

Developing the interface

Integrated Research and HP worked with Boston Communications Group, Inc. (bcgi), a leader in transaction processing solutions for wireless carriers, to develop the SPI interface between NonStop servers and OpenView software. bcgi was using the NonStop platform to support its mission-critical applications, while HP OpenView for Windows® monitored the network operations center (NOC).

“To ensure user acceptance, we had to provide information in formats that were familiar to the various specialists,” recalled Stearns. “For example, the NOC help-desk operators use OpenView to monitor network performance. They wanted to continue using the familiar OpenView screens, augmented by a clear view of root cause analysis on the NonStop systems. The increased level of insight and control provided by the PROGNOSIS SPI product exceeded the expectations of bcgi.”

bcgi wanted to integrate the NonStop systems management solution with OpenView to streamline its mission-critical network monitoring and management processes, while providing a comprehensive view of its platforms and systems. bcgi required a solution that would allow it to meet the management and reporting needs of both the NonStop and OpenView environments. The company also required the solution to obtain HP OpenView certification prior to being introduced to a production environment.

“PROGNOSIS offered an elegant solution that enabled us to seamlessly integrate our HP NonStop servers and OpenView system to provide a single, real-time view of our systems and platforms,” stated Robert Cline, vice president of production systems for bcgi. “It enabled us to fully leverage the training and knowledge of our network monitoring team by allowing the front-end environment to remain practically unchanged, while introducing the ability to combine real-time monitoring capabilities with a clear view of root cause analysis.”

Clear benefits

With PROGNOSIS SPI for HP OpenView, bcgi has further streamlined its network monitoring and management by reducing both the points of management and the time taken to resolve network-impacting issues. By creating an interface between the NonStop servers and OpenView, the company has gained further visibility and control of the heterogeneous infrastructure and applications that are crucial to its business and that of its carrier customers.

“We were proud to help spearhead the development and certification of PROGNOSIS SPI for HP OpenView,” concluded Cline. “As thought leaders in large-scale transaction processing and network management, bcgi has always been at the forefront of developing tools that set the industry standard for monitoring and managing complex systems where anything less than 24 x 7 uptime is unacceptable.”

Now more than ever, organizations rely on the performance and availability of key business systems and applications to support their critical business functions. The ability to streamline the management of these systems and applications provides immediate benefit, by identifying and resolving performance issues before they impact the business.

HP OpenView applications have long helped organizations increase the performance of their computing infrastructures, anticipate and correct problems before they become critical, and automate and manage change in real time. With PROGNOSIS SPI for HP OpenView, a whole new set of capabilities is available for advanced monitoring and management of the total enterprise environment.
