I. INTRODUCTION

Purpose of this EuroGuide

This EuroGuide provides specific installation instructions and other information you should know before you install and use this software. Installation instructions are provided for the following operating systems:

  • Windows 3.1
  • Windows NT 3.51
  • Windows NT 4.0
  • Windows 95/98

This file provides specific installation, compatibility, and troubleshooting information. For additional information on the printer and driver operation, refer to the online help included with your printer software and your printer`s user`s guide (included with your printer).

Who needs this software?

The HP Euro software solutions are required to print the Euro symbol. This software can also be used with the HP LaserJet Euro Font DIMM and SIMMs. Included in this software are updated fonts containing the Euro Symbol and updated drivers where applicable.

See http://www.hp.com/go/laserjeteuro/ for more information.

The HP LaserJet Euro Font DIMM (C4210A) is used in the HP LaserJet 4000/5000/8000 series of printers. The HP LaserJet Euro Font SIMM (C4211A) is used in the HP LaserJet 5/5Si/6P printers. An additional SIMM will be available for the HP Color LaserJet, Color LaserJet 5, LaserJet 4 Series and the LaserJet 5P printers. The HP LaserJet Euro Font DIMM/SIMM is used to provide a hardware solution for Windows, DOS and UNIX applications that cannot use a typical software solution. See the DIMM/SIMM note below under "HINTS" section.

INSTALLATION ALERT!

Before installation is considered complete the following task must be done:

Note: Windows `98 does not require the installation of Microsoft`s Euro update.

II. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Installation Options

When operating in a Windows environment, the CD-ROM setup software will detect the version of the operating system that you are running. The installer provides two installation options: Typical and Unattended.

Typical Installation

  • Close all applications. Turn off virus checkers and terminate stay resident (TSR) programs. After installation, these programs can be turned back on.
  • Turn off or disable any PCL Status Windows and the ToolBox for the HP LaserJet 6P printer.
  • Insert the CD-ROM (or browse to the drive location where the LaserJet Euro Solution was downloaded). Run the setup program (x:\SETUP.EXE, where x is the CD-ROM drive letter).
  • Please read the EuroGuide as it contains important information concerning the Euro. Close the EuroGuide. Select Next.
  • Select the HP LaserJet printer you want to update. If your printer model is not shown, select "Other HP LaserJet".
  • Select the port of the printer. If you have selected "Other HP LaserJet" you don`t need to make a port selection.
  • Select the fonts and drivers available for installation. Installation of the fonts is required to update your system with the Euro enabled fonts.
  • If you want a web link placed on your desktop, pointing to the Microsoft Euro updates, answer Yes, otherwise select No.
  • When finished you may restart the computer at this time or if you have not installed the Microsoft Euro update (required for Windows `95 and NT 4.0), exit the installer and install Microsoft`s Euro update at this time. Restart is necessary for changes to take effect.

Unattended Installation

Unattended installation allows you to configure Setup to run without user interaction. This feature is useful when you want to use the default selections provided by Setup or when you want to run the installation without being prompted. A system administrator can also create a custom batch file containing specific drivers, allowing users to run Setup without interacting with it.

This option is run from the command line using the following syntax:

setup.exe [-b [-port=<value>] [-printer=<number>]] [-gv] [-gd]

***NOTE: Values that follow equals signs (=) in a command line must follow the equal sign immediately with no intervening spaces.

The -b option runs Setup in batch mode. In this mode, you are not prompted to make any selections. Setup uses default values for port and printer settings if they are not specified.

The -port= option provides Setup with a specific port value. If this option is omitted, Setup uses the default value, LPT1. The port value can be a UNC (Universal Network Connection) address. This option can only be used when -b is also used.

The -printer= option provides Setup with the printer model value. Printer values are numbered based on their location in the Select Printer dialog, with the value of the first model in the list equal to 0. To see the list of models in order, you must view it in Setup in the standard interactive mode. This option is only available when -b is also used.

The -gv option includes all available logging information in the log files.

The -gd option puts detailed information in the log file, but it does not include all logging information.

You can preset these options in the setup.lst file located on Disk1. In the [Defaults]section, add the following syntax:

Options= -b -port=<value> -printer=<number>

Note: Administrator privileges are required to install the HP Euro Font software onto a Windows NT system.

Other Operating Systems

Please see the HP LaserJet web page (http://www.hp.com/go/laserjeteuro/) for details on OS/2, Unix, DOS or Macintosh support.

Free HP LaserJet Euro fonts downloaded from the web site above include scalable and bitmapped fonts that can be used in various environments.

III. HINTS

Keystroke shortcuts to display the Euro

Microsoft has set up keystroke shortcuts to display the Euro within your applications. The table below gives a brief view of the keystrokes available to operating systems that have Euro support.

Alt+0128 Available in all countries

Choosing a solution that works for you

  • Printing the Euro without Euro support in the printer

If your HP LaserJet printer does not include the Euro character, there are free software only solutions available for printing the Euro. There are three different options to choose from. Windows 95 and NT4.0 require the Microsoft Euro update for two of the options. A link to the Microsoft web page is available at http://www.hp.com/go/laserjeteuro/. The final version of Microsoft`s Euro update is required for the Euro to display and print correctly.

Note: Windows `98 does not require the installation of Microsoft`s Euro update.

Option 1: Using HP`s EuroSign & EuroSign Mono fonts

HP`s EuroSign or EuroSign Mono fonts are True Type fonts and they work in Windows 3.x/ 95/ 98 and Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0. These fonts work with or without the Microsoft Euro updates.

If you choose not to install Microsoft`s Euro update or modify the settings within your printer driver, you can still use HP`s EuroSign or EuroSign Mono fonts. These HP fonts (EuroSign and EuroSign Mono) are installed automatically with this software package. These fonts are also available free from http://www.hp.com/go/laserjeteuro.

To use these fonts, select the font and then type a lowercase "e."

Option 2: Using HP`s and Microsoft`s Euro enabled fonts (Windows 95/98 & NT4.0 only)

After you have completed the installation process, you should now be able to display the Euro character within your Windows applications. If you are using any of the HP LaserJet printer fonts (listed under the "Installed Fonts" section below) within your application, and your printer does not contain the Euro character, you can print the Euro by selecting "TrueType as Bitmaps," "TrueType as Graphics," "Always use TrueType fonts, " or "LaserJet III Compatible" within the printer driver.

The terminology for "TrueType as Bitmap" may differ between drivers and operating systems. If you are given a choice between terminology, choose "TrueType as Bitmap" over "TrueType as Graphics". You can either set this as a default setting within your printer driver (see below for details), or you can set the printer driver temporarily within your application`s print menu if available.

Windows 95/98 Printer Driver Note:

If you are using the installer downloaded from the HP LaserJet Euro Solutions web site, option 2 was set in the PCL5e and PCL6 driver for you automatically (with the exception of the 5L, 6L, 5Si, and Color LaserJet products).

If your printer contains additional fonts via a font cartridge, hard disk, or Flash SIMM\DIMM, selecting "TrueType as Bitmaps" or equivalent will prevent you from printing with these additional fonts. If you are in the situation where you need to access these additional fonts as well as the Euro character, you can use either Option 1 or Option 3.

Windows NT 4.0 Printer Driver Notes:

The Windows NT4.0 drivers included in this software do not require modification. Other printer driver may work as well. However, you may need to set "TrueType as Graphics" within the non-HP printer driver. This setting is also application dependent, i.e. some applications require this setting while other applications do not.

Setting your printer driver manually (Windows 95/98 and Windows NT4.0):

The following printer driver information and views are shown as examples of where you can make these changes, if needed, to print the Euro character.

How to access your printer driver and the views shown below:

  • Select START/SETTINGS/PRINTERS
  • Highlight your printer
  • Using the RIGHT mouse button, select PROPERTIES (Windows 95/98) or DOCUMENT DEFAULTS (Windows NT 4.0)

Option 3: Using Microsoft`s Euro enabled fonts (Windows 95/98 and Windows NT4.0)

After you have completed the installation process, you should now be able to display the Euro character within your Windows applications using the HP fonts listed in Section IV. However some applications may not display the Euro character, refer to the Troubleshooting Section V for solutions.

Included in Microsoft`s Euro update are additional fonts that support the Euro character. The fonts that Microsoft updated are Arial, Arial Black, Comic Sans MS, Courier New, Impact, Tahoma, Times New Roman, and Verdana.

Additional Notes For Printer Operation:

Printing the Euro with Euro support in your printer

  • DIMM/SIMM Operation In Windows 95/98:

If you purchased an HP Euro Font SIMM\DIMM, then you can deselect the "TrueType as Bitmap" setting and the printer driver will use the DIMM/SIMM fonts. See the driver views described in Option 2 above.

Microsoft Euro Updates

  • Windows 95 requires the Microsoft Euro update. As of this writing it was only available in English. Watch for updates from Microsoft.
  • Windows NT4.0 requires either the Microsoft Euro update for NT, or installation of Service Pack 4.
  • Office 97 Service Release 2 has several application fixes for Euro printing problems.
  • Windows 98 does not require the installation of Microsoft`s Euro update.
  • New versions of the Microsoft Euro updates are available from Microsoft. The most current versions of the Euro update for Windows 95 and NT4.0 are required in order for the Euro to display and print correctly.

IV. SOFTWARE COMPONENTS

Installed Fonts

You may have some older HP LaserJet True Type fonts installed on your computer. This software package installs new versions of the these fonts. Before the new fonts are installed, the installer will remove the old fonts. The uninstalled fonts will be moved to the subdirectory "fonts_un" within your windows directory (c:\windows\fonts_un). The fonts installed are described below.

Some applications install non-HP versions of these fonts. If you have completed installation of the Microsoft Euro update and the HP Euro software (which includes these fonts) and the Euro still does not display on the screen for the HP LaserJet printer fonts, then it is most likely that a non-HP version of the font exists.

Verifying the HP Euro font version:

Select START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL.

Select and open the FONTS folder.

Select the Font Name and View Details.

Verify the files names and dates indicated below.

V. TROUBLESHOOTING

  • The Euro character is not displayed.

1) If you have not installed the Microsoft Euro update, the Euro character will not display correctly.

2) The font you are using may not support the Euro character. Reselect the font using either Microsoft`s or HP`s Euro enabled fonts.

3) Some applications install non-HP versions of these fonts. If you have completed installation of the Microsoft Euro update and the HP Euro software including the HP fonts, and the Euro still does not display for the HP LaserJet printer fonts, then it is most likely that a non-HP version of the font exists.

  • The Euro character is displayed but does not appear in the printout.

In the printer driver select the Print Quality option: "True Type As Bitmaps" or equivalent. See "Manually setting the driver..." above.

  • I cannot select the Euro character from my application.

1) Ensure that the Microsoft Euro Update is installed on your system.

2) Verify that the Euro was typed correctly, see "Typing the Euro" in the "Hints" section of this guide.

3) If your application has an "Insert Symbol" feature, try inserting the Euro via this tool.

4) Some applications won`t print the Euro. See the list below.

5) Contact your application vendor.

Known applications that do not print the Euro.

Adobe Acrobat Windows 95/98 & NT4.0
