Q. What Solutions does HP offer for LaserJet printers?
A. HP provides several free and low-cost solutions to best meet the needs of a broad range of customers using products from HP LaserJet families 4, 5, 6, 1100, 4000, 5000, and 8000. The HP LaserJet 2100, 3100, 5000LE, 8100 and Mopier 320 and HP Color LaserJet 4500 and 8500 are currently enabled to print the Euro character in Windows 95/98 and NT 4.0.
Third party offerings are available for additional printer models not falling into the categories above and for those customers who need or desire another solution.
The HP solutions are listed below:
- EuroSign Fonts:
The simplest solution for HP LaserJet printers in any operating system (Windows, DOS, UNIX, MAC) is a downloadable font that contains the Euro character in two typefaces - EuroSign and EuroSign Mono - one proportional and one monospaced. They are free and available at Free HP EuroSign Fonts.
This is the only HP software solution for Win 3.1 and NT 3.51. Documents created with these fonts may also be used on Windows 95/98 and NT systems if these fonts are installed as well.
- Software Solutions:
A complete updated HP Font set for Windows 95/98 and NT 4.0 is available for users who require a more comprehensive solution. In addition to this Windows solution, HP provides a non-Windows (UNIX, DOS) software solution for the L series and 1100 printers. These solutions are available free of charge. You may choose you software from this location.
If you would rather have the Windows 95/98 or NT 4.0 software on a CD-ROM, Ordering Information. Shipping and handling charges will apply.
- Hardware Solutions:
Customer-installable, low-cost DIMM and SIMM hardware solutions are available for customers who are using Windows or a non-Windows (DOS, UNIX) operating or application environment, using custom printing solutions, or for those who prefer a hardware solution.
Q. Do I need to upgrade my operating system?
A. Several operating systems require updates.
* Microsoft Euro Updates
- Windows 95 requires the Microsoft Euro update.
- Windows NT 4.0 requires either the Microsoft Euro update for NT, or installation of Service Pack 4.
- Office 97 Service Release 2 has several application fixes for Euro printing problems.
* Windows '98 does not require the installation of Microsoft's Euro update.
* Windows 3.x and Windows NT 3.51 are not Euro compatible. Microsoft does not provide updates. Users must use a soft font solution like HP's Free EuroSign fonts.
* DOS and UNIX do not have Euro updates. Users must use a soft font solution like HP's Free EuroSign fonts, or one of the hardware solutions.
* MacOS requires System 8.5 and LaserWriter driver 8.6. Users can use a soft font solution like HP's Free EuroSign fonts for the MacOS.
* OS/2 may require an update. Refer to the IBM Corp. OS/2 web site for details (Related Links).
Q. Will the software work for all language environments?
A. The drivers included in the software solution are localized in traditional product languages. The installer provided with the software solution will be localized in English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish. For Asia, the Windows software solutions will work; however, they are in Latin-based font sets. As Asian character standards emerge, HP will investigate potential hardware solutions. Please continue to check the website for further details.
Q. How can I get these solutions?
A. Software is downloadable from this HP web site by choosing LaserJet Euro Solutions. For customers who do not have access to the web, a CD will be orderable through Software Distribution (refer to your printer's user manual), or you may use HP's Order CD-ROM site.
The hardware products are available through and supported by your local JetCAPS partner. |

Q. Who will install it for me? How easy is it to install?
A. All solutions are customer installable. The DIMM and SIMMs install like any other regular memory modules and will have instructions in the box. Software upgrades are provided through a simple installation process via the web or Software Distribution.
Q. Does HP offer flash solution for Euro?
A. HP has worked with third party providers to offer a comprehensive flash memory solution for a wider range of current and older printer models. See www.jetcaps.com for more information.
HP chose to offer a free software solution for Windows based software customers. A hardware DIMM and SIMM solution for non-Windows applications is available through your local JetCAPS partner. Theses solutions support all of the typefaces that come installed in the printer and offer the simplest method of adding permanent fonts to the printer.
Q. Why would I use the SIMM/DIMM Solution if I have Windows 95/98?
A. Use the DIMM or SIMM solution if you are working under Windows 95/98 and have other hardware font accessories (such as bar codes, signatures, logos, or custom fonts) already installed in your printer. Be sure to deselect "True Type as Bitmap" or "True Type as Graphics" within your printer software.
Q. I have installed the Microsoft Patch and I get blank spaces where the Euro should be.
A. Within your printer driver(s), select "True Type as Bitmaps" or "True Type of Graphics" under "Print Quality" tab. Make sure that you have the most current Microsoft Euro Patch software installed.
