Overview

Using System 7.0 through Mac OS 8.1

Download the Fonts

  1. EuroSign Fonts, download the fonts from the web. Select a directory where you want to save this file to. Note this directory.
  2. Click Save.
  3. Open the directory noted above, where the downloaded file has been stored.
  4. Double-click on the icon.
  5. Drag the HP Euro Sign icon into your Fonts folder.
  6. Close folders.
To use the fonts:

  1. Open an application, such as SimpleText.
  2. From the Fonts drop-down menu, or from the menu where font selections and/or text formatting options are set, choose either EuroSign or EuroSign Mono and type a lowercase e.

Note: This will only type the Euro symbol so you will need to switch back to your normal font for any other text.
  3. To change the font back to your normal type face, repeat step 2. and select the desired font.
  4. Once you can display the euro on the screen, verify that it can be printed by simply printing your page.
Using software earlier than System 7.0
Display and printing of the Euro character is not supported under these versions of the operating system.

Using Mac OS 8.5
Mac OS 8.5 directly supports the Euro sign. Most of Apple's fonts have been updated to support the Euro. The Euro is accessed by typing SHIFT + Option + 2. Note that you must use the number 2 on the main keyboard; do not use the 2 on the numeric keypad.

Additional Information
Many of Apple's updated fonts contain Euro characters that are stylized to match the rest of the characters in the font. Fonts that have not been updated will show the universal currency symbol. In either of these cases the LaserWriter 8 driver (version 8.6) will replace the character seen on the screen with a plain Euro character. If differences between what you see on the screen and what is printed on the page cannot be tolerated in your work flow then, you may prefer to use the HP Euro sign fonts described below in the solution for users of the Mac OS prior to version 8.5.

Special considerations for Mac OS 8.5 users that print to an HP LaserJet 4000, 5000 or 8000 printer.
The Symbol font in these printers does not contain the Euro and a conflict between LaserWriter 8.6 and these printers prevents the driver from adding the character to the font. Whenever a Euro is specified a blank will be used. In order to print the Euro character on these printers you need to do the following:

  1. Use the HP LaserJet Utility to download Apple's Symbol font to the printer. Since this font contains the Euro character, printing will work as described for using Mac OS 8.5. Note that if you download the font to the printer's RAM the font will need to be downloaded again every time the printer is turned off.
  2. Use the solution described below for users of Mac OS prior to version 8.5.
