Millions of people worldwide have had their data potentially compromised by computer thefts. It is now impossible to ignore the growing identity theft crisis, much of it caused by computer thefts from high-profile corporations, government agencies, universities, and healthcare institutions.
A multi-layered security strategy is required to protect computer hardware and the data on it. With a few proactive data security steps, organizations can avoid the potential lawsuits, fines, public scrutiny, and loss of business that a lost or stolen computer can cause.
The Computrace® suite of software products provides a robust, multi-layered security solution that helps organizations address issues of regulatory compliance, data protection, computer theft recovery, and asset tracking. IT professionals use Computrace software to track and recover stolen laptops, to delete data remotely in order to protect confidential information, to detect unauthorized software or missing hardware, to ensure regulatory compliance, and to create predefined alerts to manage appropriate use policies.
HP has worked directly with Absolute Software Corporation to add the Computrace Agent to the BIOS of many HP commercial notebook and tablet PCs and select desktop and workstation models. Now, HP offers a range of support services that leverage the Computrace software. Available through HP direct sales force and partners, these services are an additional step in delivering a solution that protects your assets and helps secure your data.
Several levels of protection are available for purchase, as listed below. These levels of service are described in more detail in the service features table.
Depending on the specific HP Computrace Service purchased, your HP Computrace Service may also include:
| IT Asset Management | Remote Data Delete | Geolocation Tracking | Theft Recovery Services | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computrace One | X | X | X | X |
| Computrace for Netbooks | X | X |
Computrace software incorporates a healing technology, referred to as the "Persistence Module", which rebuilds the agent software installation, even if the agent service is deleted using conventional means. The Persistence Module is installed in the BIOS (or the firmware) of many HP computers at the factory and activated during the Application Agent's first call to the Monitoring Center. It restores the Application Agent if it is removed. It is recommended that the BIOS of any device being considered for any of the Computrace services be preloaded with the Computrace Persistence Module. Computers that do not have the Computrace Persistence Module embedded into the BIOS will have the software version of the Persistence Module called the Application Agent.
The Application Agent is installed in the operating system (as a service) by running an installer. It makes regularly scheduled calls over the internet to the Monitoring Center and provides asset and location data on each Agent call. The Application Agent also manages the "helper applications" to support activities like data delete commands or to aid in theft recovery. It is loaded in the partition gap of the hard drive upon service initiation.
Computers that do not have the Persistence Module embedded into the BIOS during the manufacturing process can still undergo installation of the Application Agent and will perform with full Computrace functionality. However, these devices will not benefit from the persistence capability available when the Persistence Module is embedded into the BIOS of the device.
The Computrace Persistence Module is preloaded on the BIOS of many HP commercial notebook, tablet PCs, workstation, and desktop models.
