The media and entertainment industry is in the midst of a massive
transformation. Media and entertainment companies are in the process of
digitizing every step in the production and consumption of
content—from the upstream creative process to how content gets
managed and monetized, right down to the user experience.
Paramount Studios is a second key partner of Ascent Media and HP, and is an established leader in the digital transformation of Hollywood films.
Some of the biggest shifts are taking place in content distribution.
As the number of downstream distribution channels expands exponentially,
media and entertainment companies are moving rapidly to digitize their
assets, in order to capitalize on new business opportunities. For
example, as demand for content on mobile devices increases, media and
entertainment companies want to be able to quickly deliver assets (such
as movies and television programming) via digital files.
Creating new revenue & business opportunities
As this industry transformation evolves and accelerates, HP is
playing a central role. HP is making it easier than ever for media and
entertainment companies to provide consumers the digital entertainment
they want—wherever and however they want it. With an unmatched
portfolio of technologies, solutions, services and partners, HP is
helping media and entertainment companies digitize, archive, and
repurpose their warehouses of films and television programs. In doing
so, HP is not only making it easier for such companies to restore,
version, and distribute their movies, but HP is also helping them create
new sources of revenue and business opportunity.
One of the critical challenges facing the media and entertainment
industry is the digitizing of enormous archives and libraries of film
reels, as well as keeping up with the massive amounts of new content
being produced every day. HP has partnered with industry leader Ascent
Media to digitize studio libraries and create the next generation of
digital film vaults. Together, they are leveraging the capabilities of
HP’s Digital Media Platform and Ascent’s deep knowledge of media
workflows to provide the industry with the storage capabilities and the
distribution mechanisms that organize content and deliver it to the
consumer in whatever way the customer likes.
Jose Royo, CTO of Ascent Media, has commented, “HP has brought innovation, scale, and robustness of solutions that have
enabled us to take all the studio content that we ingest in our library,
and to manage it in a very cost effective manner, to deliver that
content to consumers. So today, for a studio, we’re
ingesting over five terabytes of content a day; we’re delivering over
300 files, on a worldwide basis, to a variety of distributors.”
Connected to content
In addition, consumers today want to be able to connect to their content
whenever and wherever they want it—from cell phones to MP3 players to
laptops to other media devices. Further, consumers demand more content,
in more ways, and in more places. It is only through advanced solutions
for cataloging and delivering this content that media and entertainment
companies can keep up with consumer demand. The expectations are set by
the consumer, and HP is helping its clients understand and meet those
expectations.
“Consumers have a real impatience for traditional media. They want a lot
of control over their content. They want to watch it when they want, and
they want to quickly sift through it. This notion of push content moving
to more pull content is really starting to happen. It’s obvious in terms
of how young consumers deal with online content and in terms of how
technologies like DVR and file downloads are taking off. And of course,
in the music industry, everyone knows the story,” said Tom Kuehle, HP Digital Content Services. “The same thing will
happen to episodic television and theatrical movies, where more and more
consumers are going to demand on their terms when the content is
available to them. And, those consumers will want a huge library of
content, not just the small libraries of popular hits we see today
either on DVD racks or from video-on-demand experiences.”
A century of movies and decades of television were all shot on traditional film; HP’s Digital entertainment services is helping to convert, and archive this content from traditional reels to the digital format.
Responding to these demands means enabling media and entertainment
providers to interact with consumers where and how they live today. It
means creating the relationships that get content into the hands of the
user in quick, simple ways. That’s why HP is developing tools and
services that enable media and entertainment companies to distribute
content in more immediate, user-friendly ways. Through one such
initiative, HP created a digital supply chain and on-line merchandising
service for Walmart.com that resulted in a new revenue opportunity by
allowing Walmart.com to offer video downloads of movies and television
programming. For consumers, this new service provides another choice for
buying and enjoying the titles they want online. Similarly, HP is
enabling Trans World Entertainment to broaden the catalog of DVD titles
sold through its on-line stores by providing aggregation, digital
processing, and on-demand DVD manufacturing for the vast library of
studio and distributor titles that are not available today.
In every case, the driving question is: “How will consumers access and
enjoy entertainment content tomorrow?” It is part of HP’s mission to
shape the new business models and services that connect media and
entertainment companies to the consumers they entertain and inform.
Tom Kuehle, HP Digital Content Services added, “HP’s ultimate value to consumers is allowing them to enjoy content in
different formats, devices, and locations. Consumers want the nirvana of
any content, any time, any place; that’s their desire.”
