HP employees and retirees share a rich heritage and passion for volunteering. National Volunteer Week 2010 is a time to recognize and celebrate people in action. “Our goal is to inspire, equip and mobilize HP employees and retirees to be social innovators in their own communities and beyond, supporting the causes that are important to them,"
--Gabi Zedlmayer, vice president, Office of Global Social Innovation.

The examples below are just the shining peak of a mountain of giving by HP employees and retirees.

In the U.S., employees

Watch the video: Ravenswood School District, East Palo Alto
  • Served as volunteers for an East Palo Alto school district desperately in need of new technology, where they unpacked a rich array of hundreds of HP products and got them ready for children and teachers to use
  • Michael Mendenhall and other HP employees help deliver and set up HP minis and PCs at the Ravenswood School District in East Palo Alto, CA.
  • Employees in our Legal departments in Houston, Fort Collins, the San Francisco Bay Area and other locations participated in the HP Legal Pro Bono/Employee Volunteerism Program. For example, some served in “drop-in clinics,” offering free legal services (when consistent with HP Legal guidelines) to residents of their communities. To learn more visit the Legal website.
  • Participated in many volunteer activities, including raising money for La Casa de las Madres, a San Francisco shelter for women and children who have been victims of domestic violence

HP Employee volunteers in China

  • Contributed more than 7,000 volunteer hours
  • Touched the lives of hundreds of children in earthquake-damaged schools by serving in 20 new “HP Hope Computer Classrooms,” and mobile classrooms
  • Brought cheer to elderly residents in a local retirement home with a celebration of the Chinese New Year
  • Served as “Total Care Ambassadors” in HP’s “Technology Ignites Dreams” Program, which helps young people start their own businesses, and small business owners grow their businesses

“I am so touched to have had the opportunity to be a volunteer. We brought hope and fun to the children, but they gave us so much more,” said employee Quin Liu. “I loved seeing the children’s smiles,” added HP China’s Liu Ying.

Raising money at the Sunfeast Marathon in India

  • Organized a “Giving Season” initiative to collect clothes, blankets, soap, toothpaste, kitchen utensils and other necessities for people impacted by severe floods in South India – HP India also contributed US $48,745 in cash
  • Run in the “Sunfeast Marathon Bangalore” to raise money for EnAble India, a nonprofit that empowers people with disabilities
  • Taken part in ongoing volunteer programs such as Making a Difference (MAD), HP Employees: A Reason to Smile (HEARTS), and the Community Service Club
  • Touched the lives of more than 4,000 school children in the outskirts of Bangalore by distributing notebooks and other stationery items

“It was really shocking to see people nearby Bangalore who are so poor.... I would like to say big thanks to HP for initiating such a noble cause,” wrote HP blogger Chitra Srinivas.

In Spain, employees

  • Organized a “Charity Day” event to raise money for the Vicente Ferrer Foundation to provide cows for 39 poor women in rural India, so they could start and build sustainable businesses selling milk
  • Gave more money to build houses for foster families in the Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Made it possible for children of HP employees to send cards and letters to children in Honduras

In Germany, employees

  • Ran in the Komen Race for the Cure to raise money for cancer research, and took part in other local volunteer activities

In Latin America, employees are mentoring young people

  • More than 100 HP employees in Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Columbia and Costa Rica took part in Junior Achievement opportunities. The nonprofit teaches young people key concepts of work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy, inspiring them to dream big and equipping them to reach their potential
  • In Brazil, 19 HP employees mentored 64 young people from relatively poor and disadvantaged neighborhoods, expanding their horizons, helping them understand the dynamics of the job market, and enhancing their sense of motivation and self esteem.

“This program was one of the best experiences in my life.” said HP Brazil employee Luiza Tramonte.

In Ecuador, our colleagues

  • Donated their time as HP donated computers and other helpful items to an organization that assists children battling cancer
  • Painted a center for people with cerebral palsy

HP Retirees have gotten in the act, too.

A highly skilled and experienced group of more than 60,000 people, they have:

  • Volunteered for organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, United Way, the Special Olympics, Junior Achievement International, and served at local schools
  • In Singapore, HP retirees took part in a bicycle ride to raise $32,800 for local schools
  • In the San Francisco Bay Area, HP alumni gave more than 25,000 volunteer hours for “Done in a Day” projects, mentoring at-risk young people after school, and giving to holiday gifts and backpacks filled with school supplies to Family Giving Tree, so they could be distributed to children in need, among other activities
