HP Announces Multimillion-dollar Next-generation Data Center in Waikato, New Zealand

Data center to help organizations simplify IT and invest more in innovation

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, March 9, 2011

HP today announced a multimillion-dollar investment to build and lease a next-generation data center to be located in the Waikato district.

The data center is designed to enable organizations to quickly respond to market demands and new revenue opportunities.

Business and government face a growing demand for services from their customers and communities. To meet these demands, organizations need to address the challenges of aging infrastructure, under-utilized IT environments, application complexity and inflexible business processes.

HP’s Next-Generation Data Center in Tuakau will provide IT resources to help organizations simplify applications and improve business process, while increasing operational efficiency and reliability. It will help them realize an Instant-On Enterprise in which technology is embedded in everything it does to serve customers, employees, partners and communities with whatever they need, instantly.

To achieve this, the facility features:

  • an architecture based on HP Converged Infrastructure that meets changing business needs. HP Converged Infrastructure breaks through traditional, rigid IT silos with an infrastructure specifically engineered to drive out costs and provide the foundation for agile service delivery. By integrating server, storage, networking and management resources into a modular and adaptable design, HP will be able to easily accommodate future IT requirements.
  • support for variable power and cooling densities to manage computing requirements of today and the future at industry-leading energy efficiency. This also results in reduced power consumption and carbon footprint.
  • the HP Carbon Emissions Management Service, an assessment service that helps organizations calculate energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions emanating from the use of IT. This will assist organizations with compliance-based carbon footprint reporting.
  • automated management built on HP’s industry-leading software tools to will increase availability, speed of provisioning and improved service quality.
  • high availability and multiple power and cooling distribution paths and redundant components to reduce risk and deliver business continuity.
  • coupled with the existing Mt. Wellington data center in Auckland, an Active/Active configuration, which enables concurrent systems to run with real-time synchronization between the sites.

“Enterprises need the agility to adjust to dynamic market and community demands for fast, innovative services,” said Gavin Greaves, country manager, Enterprise Services, HP New Zealand. “Having a sustainable infrastructure that combines a modern platform with the services capability of HP Enterprise Services means customers can concentrate more on their business and less on managing their IT.”

The Waikato data center investment is part of HP’s $1 billion transformation to retire legacy assets and build new, modernized facilities.

The facility will provide the infrastructure organizations need for cloud computing services, application modernization and data center transformation, enabling clients to devote more resources to innovation and increase productivity.

“New Zealand has a vibrant economy which encourages technology innovation and environmental sustainability. HP’s energy-efficient data center in New Zealand, incorporating a high standard of design and capabilities, will support digital infrastructure growth and initiatives,” said Rasika Versleijen-Pradhan, senior IT services analyst, IDC New Zealand. “The facility will assist the New Zealand IT industry and provide a local platform for the provision of new high-tech infrastructure services to the region well into the future.”

HP also announced in February plans to open a new data center in Sydney, Australia, demonstrating its long-term commitment to the South Pacific region. The Sydney center is expected to be operational by the end of the year.

The New Zealand center is expected to be operational by early 2012.
