HP Commends Introduction of Conflict Minerals Trade Act

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 19, 2009

The following is a statement from Zoe McMahon, manager, Supply Chain Social and Environmental Responsibility, HP:

“HP commends Congressman Jim McDermott for introducing the Conflict Minerals Trade Act, which underscores the need to prevent the purchase of minerals from mines known to fund the ongoing armed conflict in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

“As a long-recognized industry leader in social and environmental responsibility, HP expects HP suppliers to conduct their worldwide operations in a manner that does not result in labor or human rights violations such as the direct financing of armed conflict.

“HP supports the primary goal of the Conflict Minerals Trade Act: the development of an effective, workable, cross-industry solution to meet the unique challenges posed by conflict minerals in the DRC.

“In addition to general support of the Conflict Minerals Trade Act, we will continue our long history of driving supply chain transparency and accountability, and sharing our best practices in order to assist industry and other stakeholders as this legislation proceeds. We look forward to continued collaboration with Congressman McDermott, other industries and impacted stakeholders.”
