HP Welcomes Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 22, 2009

The following is a statement from Yvonne Hunt, director Social Investment at HP:

“HP is very pleased that President Barack Obama has signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, a law designed to encourage volunteerism in the United States. The House of Representatives and the Senate should also be congratulated for passing the bill and fostering community service.

“The Serve America Act will encourage many Americans to contribute to their communities through service. It provides scholarships to retirees who volunteer; expands the kinds of activities eligible under the AmeriCorps program; and calls for an additional 250,000 participants in AmeriCorps, AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps).

“At HP, our goal has always been to live up to our responsibility to society by being an economic, intellectual and social asset to each community in which we do business. We’ve been working to place a number of our own retirees in the Silicon Valley Encore Fellows program through our relationship with Civic Ventures, where they can put the skills and experience they’ve acquired to work in the community. We fully support the Serve America Act and look forward to its positive effect across the country.”
