HP Announces 2008 Technology for Teaching Grant Opportunity PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 24, 2007HP today announced its 2008 HP Technology for Teaching Grant initiative, which will award grants totaling more than $3 million in cash and HP equipment to K-12 public schools in the United States and Puerto Rico, and more than $3 million in cash and HP equipment to two- and four-year colleges and universities in Canada, Puerto Rico and the United States. HP’s worldwide commitment to schools through the HP Technology for Teaching grants has totaled more than $44 million since 2004. “HP has invested in the future of education through donations of cash, products and services since our founding in 1939 and that legacy continues today,” said Sidney Espinosa, director, Global Philanthropy, HP. “We can reach an enormous number of highly motivated students through these programs and help foster the next generation of math, science and engineering talent in the process.” HP’s Technology for Teaching grants for K-12 public schools support efforts to improve student achievement through the innovative uses of technology in the classroom. Proposals from K-12 schools will be accepted from all subject areas, but preference will be given to projects with a focus on math or science. Extra consideration will be given to schools serving low-income student populations. HP’s Technology for Teaching grants for higher education are designed to support the redesign of math, science, computer science, information systems and engineering courses in order to increase the number of students graduating with high-tech degrees. The program aims to enhance student success as faculty members adopt technology-enhanced instruction in their classrooms. Extra consideration will be given to higher education proposals that serve students who are under-represented in these fields. Based on the outcomes of the projects funded through the 2008 grants, HP may offer grant recipients the opportunity to receive higher-value grants again in 2009. K-12 schools and colleges and universities interested in applying for these grants will find additional information, requests for proposal forms and application submission deadlines at www.hp.com/go/hpteach. Past grant successes At Clemson University in Clemson, S.C. – a two-time recipient of the HP Technology for Teaching grant – faculty use HP Tablet PCs in the teaching of calculus to support studio-style instruction, increasing student comprehension through discussion and collaboration. Additionally, HP Tablet PCs facilitate active learning in the classroom by wirelessly recording feedback, enabling faculty to address misconceptions immediately, and enhancing collaborative problem-solving. Dunbar Primary School in Lufkin, Texas, used HP equipment to launch a multidisciplinary project to teach first and second graders about the structures of vertebrate animals. Their idea was to make claymation movies based on what they had learned. The students made clay animals and used boxes to create backdrops showing the animals’ habitat. Then they used their HP digital cameras to create their movies. Technology-integrated curricula is now the norm at Dunbar. In addition, attendance has gone up and assessment test scores have steadily improved since the school received its first HP grant. HP’s Technology for Teaching grants are part of a company-wide effort to accelerate global advances in education, focusing on quality and access. HP partners closely with educators and policy-makers to expand the horizons of what education can do by taking advantage of innovative technologies and services. HP develops country-led education programs with intelligently integrated solutions to make education accessible to more students, set them on a path to lifelong learning, and lay the foundations for economic development and social change.
