ProCurve Networking by HP Expands Security Offering for the Adaptive EDGE Architecture
Secure routing and mobile access technologies help businesses meet WAN, LAN and Wireless LAN needsPALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 21, 2005
ProCurve Networking by HP today unveiled a secure, cost-effective branch office router and integrated mobile security solutions, extending the security framework of the ProCurve Adaptive EDGE Architecture from edge to edge of the network.
ProCurve is enhancing its portfolio of network hardware and software products by improving local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN) and wireless local area network (WLAN) security perimeters and providing advanced technology at affordable prices.
Security is a key component of the Adaptive EDGE Architecture, and ProCurve Networking is building on its strategy to provide a secure, mobile, multi-service network with the following products:
In related security news, ProCurve earlier this month enhanced its 5300 switches and ProCurve Manager with HP Virus Throttle technology, providing more detection, prevention and response to virus threats. The solution, based on technology developed at HP Labs, detects worm activity as traffic enters the LAN and passes through the network switch. The infection is then "throttled" back to allow the network manager to react and take action before the virus spreads.
"We continue to build breakthrough solutions with advanced features at affordable prices. With this announcement, ProCurve Networking by HP is meeting our customers' current - and future - security needs for the WAN, LAN and WLAN. Companies can now turn to ProCurve for a complete, end-to-end networking infrastructure that can easily grow and evolve with their business needs," said John McHugh, vice president and general manager, ProCurve Networking by HP. "ProCurve is delivering innovation to today's networks with Virus Throttle and takes a more strategic approach than other networking providers by delivering a built-in, not bolted-on, solution that provides greater security."
ProCurve Secure Router 7000dl Series
The ProCurve Secure Router 7000dl Series delivers modular, high-performance capabilities designed to adapt to the needs of an enterprise by supporting new services without incurring additional software costs. Unlike traditional routers, the 7000dl series is an affordable platform that grows with changing business needs. The routers include a stateful firewall to prevent denial of service attacks, offer access control list (ACL) and virtual local area network (VLAN) support to restrict traffic flow, and include an 802.1X supplicant. To support an increasingly mobile workforce, the 7000dl series provides optional IPSec VPN termination to allow remote users to connect to their corporate office over the Internet.
"Doors are opening for me for even more potential sales now that ProCurve Networking by HP is developing a cost-effective and secure WAN connectivity solution," said Tareq Nu'man, Networking Engineer at Al-Diwan United Co., a reseller located in Kuwait. "For the first time, I can offer the entire networking package from ProCurve, which simplifies implementation and gives my customers a greater sense of security at an affordable cost."
The first two products to be introduced as part of ProCurve's WAN portfolio include the 7102dl and 7203dl routers. The 7102dl router includes two slots to support modular WAN interface cards and is designed to support up to four T1/E1 connections. The 7203dl router includes two slots and one wide slot to support modular WAN interface cards and is designed to support up to 12 T1/E1 connections.
Using an industry-standard command line interface (CLI), the Secure Router 7000dl Series is designed to minimize the amount of training or certification required to support configuration. The routers reduce complexity with a feature-rich graphics user interface (GUI) that allows for easy configuration of the firewall, ACLs and VPN connections. Additionally, all routers include a compact flash port to enable easy installation by booting configuration and image files from the flash drive without having to be command-line savvy.
The series supports open standards to allow choice and flexibility when designing networks. Standard protocols supported include RIP, RIPv2, OSPF, BGP4, and IGMPv2 to support interoperability with legacy and multi-vendor products. Both routers are backed by a lifetime, next-business-day replacement warranty, 8 hours a day/5 days a week phone support, and ProCurve's industry-leading free software updates.
ProCurve Switch xl Access Controller Module
For medium to large enterprise customers concerned about the added security risks of deploying a wireless LAN, the ProCurve Switch xl Access Controller Module enables secure, mobile user access to appropriate network services on any ProCurve 5300xl switch at the edge of the network where users connect. With the addition of the ProCurve Switch xl Access Controller Module, the ProCurve Switch 5300xl series delivers a unique approach to integrating identity-based user access control, wireless data privacy and secure roaming with the flexibility of a full-featured intelligent edge switch. Centrally managed from the ProCurve Secure Access Server 740wl, the Access Controller Module frees users from having authentication software on their appliance, moving the functionality to the edge of the network and providing hassle-free access while maintaining a high level of security.
Unlike other networking providers, the ProCurve Access Controller Module utilizes existing standards-based networking infrastructure without locking the customer into proprietary features for future networking requirements. Key features include a personalized view of the network based on business needs, seamless Layer 3 roaming, and wireless data privacy. In addition, the Access Controller Module provides web-based authentication, bandwidth control, and misconfigured service management and proxy redirection.
Virus Throttle Technology for ProCurve Networking
Traditional methods of addressing viruses, worms, and other malicious code depend on signatures and patches, which leaves systems vulnerable to previously unknown threats until protective code can be written and deployed. At a time when viruses spread more quickly than ever before, often generating paralyzing amounts of network traffic, this is a significant lapse.
In contrast, virus-throttling technology developed by HP Labs, the company's central research facility, focuses on the behavior of malicious code rather than on its content, so it can identify and respond even to previously unknown threats. By focusing on blocking such code from spreading across VLANs, it addresses the immense network traffic that is one of the most destructive aspects of such code. Virus throttling technology is highly effective, stopping the spread of the W32/Nimda-D virus in internal tests, for example, in less than one second. By slowing or blocking suspect traffic until administrators have time to act, connection-rate filtering in the ProCurve Switch 5300xl adds a crucial tool to the defenses of networks.
Pricing and availability
The ProCurve Secure Router 7000dl series is expected to be available in April. The 7102dl router chassis has a U.S. list price of $1,499. The 7203dl router chassis has a U.S. list price of $2,999. The Switch xl Access Controller Module for the ProCurve 5300xl switch is expected to be available in April and has an estimated U.S. list price of $5,499. The Virus Throttle solution is available now and is offered as a free software download for customers who currently own or purchase the ProCurve Switch 5300xl and ProCurve Manager Plus.(1)
