HP and Magic Johnson Foundation Double Team to Defeat Digital Divide in Miami

Magic Johnson and HP Inventor Center featuring HP technology opens in Miami

MIAMI, Feb. 20, 2004

HP and the Magic Johnson Foundation today brought their community technology initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide to Miami with the opening of the 12th Magic Johnson/HP Inventor Center at the Mattie Koonce Learning Center (MKC) in the city's Overtown community.

The center will join 11 other Inventor Centers around the country in offering training and skills development and access to online services for community youths and adults.

Funded by HP, the initiative has already opened centers in inner-city communities in Los Angeles, Washington, Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Houston and Lansing, Mich. The investment totals $1.4 million over a three-year rollout.

"Many people take computer technology for granted because it's such a major part of our society now. But imagine not having the education or the ability to access computers," said Earvin "Magic" Johnson, founder of the Magic Johnson Foundation. "Thanks to organizations with a strong sense of responsibility like HP, my Foundation can come into the community and provide the necessary training and education that the kids and the residents of the community may not be getting otherwise."

The Magic Johnson Foundation and HP selected the Mattie Koonce site with the assistance of the Florida Digital Divide Council, a council established by the Florida legislature that is focused on bridging the digital divide in its under-served communities. The Magic Johnson/HP Inventor Center will feature a powerful lineup of HP commercial and consumer products - from servers, desktop and notebook PCs to printers, projectors and digital cameras.

"The center will help ensure that residents have access to computer technology so they can continue to develop indispensable skills for a technologically driven world," said Miami Mayor Manuel A. Diaz. "We thank HP, the Magic Johnson Foundation and the other organizations that came forward to make this happen."

"HP strongly believes in providing access to social and economic opportunities through technology," said Wayne Fountain, district manager, Public Sector Organization, HP. "HP's collaboration with the Magic Johnson Foundation enables us to expand our reach to ensure residents in under-served communities such as Overtown are able to fully leverage technology to improve their way of life."

The MKC is the only facility that offers a comprehensive array of education and technology services that cater specifically to the needs of children, adults and senior citizens in Overtown.

The MKC educates residents, many of whom do not have a computer at home, to fully utilize technology as a means of advancement in today's academic institutions and job market. With input from local community members, the MKC staff evaluates the growing needs of its residents and organizes programs to address those needs. Additional information on the MKC is available at http://www.mkcenter.org.

Other sponsors supporting the Magic Foundation/HP Inventor Center include: DHL, Freddie Mac and Eastwind Consulting Group.
